Tanjiro is a kind-hearted boy who becomes a demon slayer after tragedy strikes his family. He travels with his sister Nezuko and trains hard to protect others from demons. His gentle nature and strong sense of smell set him apart from other fighters in Demon Slayer.

Appearance

Tanjiro is a sturdy teenager with burgundy hair worn in a short, messy cut, warm reddish eyes and a distinctive scar on the left side of his forehead, left by protecting his brother from a falling brazier. He wears the Demon Slayer Corps uniform under a green-and-black checkered haori, with white leg wraps and sandals, and hanafuda earrings passed down in his family swing from his ears. A black Nichirin blade hangs at his hip, and on his back rides the wooden box where Nezuko travels. His face is open and expressive, determination, grief and kindness all show at once, which is exactly who he is.

Personality

Tanjiro is famously kind, kind to friends, strangers, and even to the demons he kills, whose pain he genuinely mourns in their final moments. That gentleness is not softness: his will is iron, his work ethic relentless, and his anger at cruelty absolute. He can smell lies, fear and sorrow, and he answers all three with honesty. Tanjiro apologises to enemies, headbutts Hashira who insult his sister, and trains until his hands bleed, all with the same sincerity. In a corps full of scarred, hardened fighters, his compassion is his defining strength, the thing demons, slayers and viewers all underestimate exactly once.

Background & Story

Tanjiro was the eldest son of a poor charcoal-selling family in the mountains, a boy who carried the household after his father died. Returning home one winter morning, he found his mother and siblings slaughtered and his sister Nezuko transformed into a demon, yet a demon who protected him instead of eating him. A passing slayer, Giyu Tomioka, saw that miracle and sent Tanjiro to train under Sakonji Urokodaki. After two years of brutal mountain training, Tanjiro passed Final Selection and joined the Demon Slayer Corps, carrying Nezuko in a box on his back. His mission is simple and enormous: hunt the demon who destroyed his family, Muzan Kibutsuji, and find a cure that will make his sister human again.
