About Kyojuro Rengoku

Kyojuro Rengoku is the Flame Hashira, a bright, booming warrior who lives by his mother's teaching to protect the weak. He meets Tanjiro's group aboard the Mugen Train and leads the fight against the demon haunting its passengers. Honest, cheerful and utterly fearless, he treats every meal, mission and battle as something to face with his whole heart ablaze.

Appearance

Rengoku is impossible to miss: a tall, broad young man with wild golden hair streaked with red, worn long like a lion's mane, and thick eyebrows over bright, intense eyes that seem to look straight through people. His haori is white fading into flames of red and orange at the hem, worn over the Corps uniform, and his Nichirin blade burns red. He stands like a flag in a wind, chest out, chin up, smiling with total confidence. Even his voice is part of the design: loud, warm and declarative, announcing 'tasty!' over a station bento with the same fervour he brings to a battlefield.

Personality

Rengoku is enthusiasm as a moral philosophy. He is cheerful, honourable, eccentric and absolutely without doubt, not because he has never suffered, but because his mother gave his strength a purpose before she died: the strong exist to protect the weak. He lives inside that sentence completely. He praises loudly, decides instantly, accepts Tanjiro's demon sister on the strength of the Corps' judgement, and treats every duty as a privilege. There is no shadow of cynicism in him, which in this series is rarer than any sword technique. When Rengoku tells a frightened boy to set his heart ablaze, it lands because everyone can see he has done exactly that his entire life.

Background & Story

Kyojuro was the eldest son of the Rengoku family, Flame Hashira for generations. His father Shinjuro, once Hashira himself, sank into bitterness and drink after his wife Ruka's early death, and told his son his talent was worthless. Kyojuro raised himself and his little brother Senjuro on their mother's teachings and the family's flame chronicles, training alone until he earned the Flame Hashira title his father had abandoned. Aboard the Mugen Train he is assigned to hunt the demon devouring passengers, with Tanjiro's group sent to support him. What happens on that train, his warmth, his teaching and his stand, turns the cheerful Hashira into the standard by which the young slayers measure what a Hashira should be.

• Tanjiro Kamado: The young slayer Rengoku takes under his wing on the Mugen Train, offering to make him his tsuguko and leaving him words to live by.
• Akaza: The Upper Rank Three who offers Rengoku eternity as a demon, and receives the refusal that defines them both.
• Mitsuri Kanroji: The Love Hashira was once Rengoku's tsuguko, her Breathing style grew out of his Flame Breathing and her time under him.
