Shinobu is the Insect Hashira, a smiling, soft-spoken swordswoman who runs the Butterfly Mansion where wounded slayers recover. Too light to cut off a demon's head, she fights with a thin stinger-like blade and deadly poisons brewed from wisteria flowers. Her constant gentle smile hides a deep, burning anger at demons for the sister she lost years ago.

Appearance

Shinobu is the smallest Hashira, petite, with dark purple hair fading to violet, worn up with a large butterfly ornament, and purple eyes with no visible pupils that give her smile an unreadable quality. She wears a white haori patterned like butterfly wings over her uniform, and her sword is unlike any other: a slim, needle-like blade with a stinger tip, built to inject rather than cut, carried in a sheath shaped like an insect's body. She moves like something floating, light steps, fluttering sleeves, and smiles almost constantly. The effect is deliberately disarming, which is exactly how she likes it.

Personality

Shinobu is soft-spoken, teasing and relentlessly cheerful on the surface, and absolutely furious underneath. Demons took her parents and then her beloved older sister Kanae, the former Flower Hashira, and Shinobu has smiled over her rage ever since, because Kanae loved that smile. She is brilliant, sardonic and a little cruel with her words, especially to Giyu, yet genuinely devoted to the girls she rescues and raises at the Butterfly Mansion. Her kindness and her vengeance are not in conflict; they are the same promise kept two ways. Shinobu is what grief looks like when it decides to become useful, and patient.

Background & Story

Shinobu was the younger daughter of a family of pharmacists, saved with her sister Kanae when a demon attacked their home by the slayer Gyomei Himejima. Both sisters joined the Corps, Kanae rising to Flower Hashira while small, slight Shinobu found she lacked the strength to behead demons at all. So she reinvented the job: pharmacology, poisoncraft and a blade built to deliver wisteria toxin with every sting. When Kanae died from wounds given by an Upper Rank demon, Shinobu took over the Butterfly Mansion, her sister's haori and her role, rescuing girls like Kanao from ruined lives and training them, while quietly preparing, dose by dose, for the demon who killed her sister.
