Nezuko is Tanjiro's younger sister and the sole survivor of the attack that destroyed their family, except she did not stay human. Turned into a demon, she travels in a wooden box on her brother's back, wears a bamboo muzzle, and does the unthinkable for a demon: she sleeps instead of eating people, and protects humans as if they were her own family. Gentle, brave and far stronger than she looks.

Appearance

Nezuko is a petite girl with very long black hair that fades to orange at the tips, worn with a small pink ribbon, and soft pink eyes that turn cat-like, with slit pupils, when she fights. She wears a light pink kimono patterned with hemp leaves, a dark haori and a bamboo muzzle tied over her mouth, placed there so she can never bite anyone. Most of the time she travels shrunk to child size inside the wooden box on Tanjiro's back, peeking out with sleepy, gentle expressions. In battle she grows to her full height, veins rise on her forehead and a horn can emerge, the sweet sister and the fierce demon in one body.

Personality

Even as a demon, Nezuko's heart stayed human. Urokodaki's suggestion helped her see all humans as family, but the love underneath was always hers: she shields Tanjiro and strangers alike with her own body, and has never eaten a human despite a demon's hunger. She is gentle, playful and drowsy in peacetime, humming, swaying and sleeping for days, and terrifyingly protective in danger. Nezuko cannot speak much beyond hums and a few words, yet her feelings are never unclear. She is the story's proof that what makes someone human is not blood, but choice, a choice she makes again every single day.

Background & Story

Nezuko was the eldest daughter of the Kamado family, a cheerful girl who helped raise her younger siblings in their mountain home. The night Muzan Kibutsuji attacked, she was the only one left alive, because his blood turned her into a demon instead of killing her. When she woke, she attacked Tanjiro on instinct, then stopped, cried, and protected him from Giyu Tomioka's blade. That act changed everything: Giyu spared her, and Urokodaki placed a suggestion in her mind to see humans as family. Nezuko sleeps instead of eating people, rides in a box by day, and fights beside her brother by night, a demon travelling with demon slayers, hunting the king who made her one.
