Horror Anime

Horror anime loves the dark, curses, monsters and stories that keep you nervous until the very end. Some go for sudden scares, others for slow, creepy dread. Watch with the lights on, if you dare.

Denji is a poor teenager who hunts devils to pay off his father's debt, helped by his pet devil Pochita. When Pochita saves his life by merging with him, Denji becomes Chainsaw Man, a devil-human hybrid with chainsaws for arms. It is wild, funny, sad and completely unpredictable. The Chainsaw Man anime is produced by MAPPA and adapted from Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga, and it looks and sounds like nothing else. Every episode of Season 1 even ended with a different ending song and its own animation. Under the gore and chaos is a strangely touching story about a boy who never had a normal life (a warm bed, good food, people who care) and would kill devils just to keep a small piece of it.

Ken Kaneki is a quiet student who loves books, until a date ends in disaster and he wakes up with a ghoul's organs inside him. Now half-human, half-ghoul, he is hunted by the ghoul investigators of the CCG, feared by humans, and unable to eat anything but human flesh. The staff of the Anteiku coffee shop take him in and teach him to survive in both worlds. Pierrot's anime (2014–2018) runs for 48 episodes across Tokyo Ghoul, the anime-original sequel √A, and the two cours of Tokyo Ghoul:re, plus the Jack and Pinto OVAs. It adapts Sui Ishida's dark manga, 30 volumes across Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul:re, though the anime compresses and, in √A's case, rewrites major parts of the story. What never changes is the core: a kind boy forced to eat to live, a city split between hunters and hunted, and operatic battles between ghouls and the doves who exterminate them.

One night, small alien parasites rain down on Earth and burrow into human brains, taking over the bodies and feeding on other humans. One of them fails: it ends up in the right hand of 17-year-old Shinichi Izumi instead. The parasite, which Shinichi names Migi, can reshape his hand into blades and eyes, and the two are forced into an uneasy partnership, if either dies, so does the other. As more parasites hide among people, some hunting in secret and others trying to live quietly, Shinichi is pulled into a hidden war where anyone's face could hide a monster. Made by Madhouse in 2014–2015, Parasyte: The Maxim adapts Hitoshi Iwaaki's classic manga in one complete 24-episode run. It is a tense horror-action story that keeps asking a hard question: when Shinichi starts changing, and the parasites start learning feelings, which side is really more human?

The Promised Neverland follows Emma, Norman and Ray, the brightest children at Grace Field House, a warm and loving orphanage run by their devoted caretaker, 'Mom' Isabella. The children eat well, study hard and play freely. The only rule is never to pass the gate or the fence around the grounds. One night, Emma and Norman follow a younger girl who has been 'adopted' to the gate, and discover the truth: the home is a farm, the children are its livestock, and demons are waiting on the other side. What follows in the first season is a masterclass in tension, a silent game of tag, codes and lies in which three eleven-year-olds plot an impossible escape against the one adult they trusted most. The second season takes the survivors beyond the wall, into a demon world of forests, shelters and uneasy allies, as Emma fights to keep a bigger promise: freedom for every child on every farm. Across 23 episodes, the series blends mystery, horror and heartfelt family drama, powered by Takahiro Obata's delicate score and CloverWorks' expressive animation. It remains one of the most gripping thriller anime of its era.
