Gyomei Himejima

Gyomei Himejima

From Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Quick Answer

Gyomei Himejima is a supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, the Stone Hashira, a huge, blind monk-like warrior widely regarded as the strongest Demon Slayer in the Corps. He fights with a chained axe and flail, guided by sound and spirit. He is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita in Japanese and Crispin Freeman in English.

About Gyomei Himejima

Gyomei is the Stone Hashira, a huge, blind monk-like warrior who weeps easily for the suffering of others and is widely regarded as the strongest Demon Slayer. He fights with a chained axe and flail instead of a normal sword, guided by sound and an unshakable spirit. Gentle with children and orphans, he is a wall no demon wants to face.

Appearance

Gyomei towers over every other slayer, 220 cm of solid muscle, with short spiky black hair, a scar across his forehead and white, sightless eyes that constantly well with tears. He wears the Corps uniform with an olive-green robe over it, wooden prayer beads around his neck and wrists, and he is almost always pressing his palms together in prayer, chanting softly. His weapons complete the image of a temple guardian: a massive spiked flail and a hand-axe joined by a long chain, carried like ritual implements. Gyomei weeping, praying and wielding two of the heaviest weapons in the Corps at once is one of the series' defining sights.

Personality

Gyomei is gentle to the core, a man who cries at the suffering of birds, children and enemies, and whose first instinct is always compassion. He is also, without contradiction, the most trusted and feared fighter in the Corps: the Master relies on his judgement, and the other Hashira name him the strongest among them. His faith is not decoration; falsely imprisoned as a young man after demons killed the orphans in his care and the one survivor blamed him, Gyomei learned to be deeply careful about trusting appearances, yet he never let that betrayal harden him into suspicion of everyone. He is what strength looks like when it chooses kindness on purpose, every day.

Background & Story

Gyomei was a blind temple monk raising nine orphaned children when a demon talked its way past the wisteria incense one night. He fought it bare-handed until dawn to protect the children, but only one survived, and that child, terrified, told the authorities the monk was the killer. Gyomei was imprisoned and nearly executed before Kagaya Ubuyashiki intervened, convinced of his innocence, and invited him into the Corps. In eight years Gyomei rose to Stone Hashira, the strongest slayer of his generation, running a territory of the Corps' work and quietly vetting the people the Master most needs to trust, including, eventually, a boy and his demon sister whose story rhymed with his own.

Powers & Abilities

  • Stone Breathing: A style built on absolute stability and weight, five forms that turn Gyomei's chained weapons into an inescapable storm of stone.
  • Chained axe and flail: Instead of a sword, Gyomei wields a spiked flail and axe on a long Nichirin chain, striking from any angle with crushing force.
  • Superhuman senses: Blind since birth, Gyomei reads the battlefield through sound and air, tracking his chain's vibrations to 'see' everything around him.
  • Strongest Hashira: His physical strength is the greatest in the Corps, recognised by demons and Hashira alike as the peak of human power.

Key Relationships

  • Shinobu Kocho: The Hashira Gyomei saved as a child alongside her sister Kanae, the beginning of the Kocho family's story in the Corps.
  • Sanemi Shinazugawa: A fellow Hashira who respects Gyomei above all others; the Stone Hashira's calm is one of the few things that steadies Sanemi.
  • Tanjiro Kamado: The boy whose case Gyomei judged carefully for the Master, his Hashira Training later pushes Tanjiro to his limits.
  • Muichiro Tokito: The youngest Hashira, for whom the senior Gyomei quietly serves as an example of what a Hashira should be.
