Giyu Tomioka
Giyu Tomioka is a supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, the Water Hashira, the first Hashira Tanjiro meets. He spared Nezuko, sent Tanjiro to his own former master, and fights with calm, flawless Water Breathing. He is voiced by Takahiro Sakurai in Japanese and Johnny Yong Bosch in English.
About Giyu Tomioka
Giyu is the stoic Water Hashira, the first Hashira Tanjiro ever meets. He spared Nezuko when he saw her protect her brother, and sent Tanjiro to train under Urokodaki. Quiet, blunt and often misunderstood by the other Hashira, he carries heavy guilt from his past, yet his Water Breathing is calm, precise and completely without wasted movement in battle.
Appearance
Giyu is a tall, lean man with messy black hair tied in a low ponytail, deep blue eyes and a face that almost never changes expression. His haori is famously split in two: one half solid crimson, the other a green-and-yellow geometric pattern, two keepsakes sewn into one garment, though he never explains them. He wears the standard Corps uniform and carries his Nichirin blade with the unshowy readiness of a man always half-expecting a fight. Everything about Giyu is restrained: his colours, his words, his movements in battle, which flow like the water he wields, no ripple wasted.
Personality
Giyu comes across as cold, blunt and aloof, and the other Hashira largely dislike him for it, he stands apart at meetings and speaks in flat, graceless sentences that sound like insults. The truth is sadder: Giyu is drowning in survivor's guilt and believes he does not deserve his place among the Hashira at all. He is not unkind, he risked his rank and life for Nezuko on a stranger's word, and offered his own life as forfeit if she ever ate a human. His awkwardness is a man who has decided his own feelings are a burden. Few characters in the series need a friend more, or resist one harder.
Background & Story
Giyu lost his older sister Tsutako to a demon the night before her wedding, she died hiding him, and then, at Final Selection, his best friend Sabito did the fighting that saved the other candidates while Giyu was knocked out early. Sabito died; Giyu passed without, as he sees it, defeating a single demon, and became Water Hashira carrying the belief that the title should have been Sabito's. The two halves of his haori are theirs: his sister's and Sabito's, worn so they are never fully gone. When a grieving boy with a demon sister crossed his path years later, Giyu recognised something, and broke the Corps' rules for the first time, betting his life that this demon girl was different.
Powers & Abilities
- Water Breathing mastery: Giyu performs all ten Water Breathing forms with complete, economical precision as the style's current master.
- Eleventh Form: Dead Calm: Giyu's own original form, he enters a state of total stillness that nullifies every attack entering his range, cutting them down before they land.
- Hashira-level swordsmanship: His speed, defence and control rank among the finest of the nine Hashira, even by their standards.
Key Relationships
- Tanjiro Kamado: The boy Giyu chose to believe in, he sent Tanjiro to his own master and pledged his life on Nezuko's innocence.
- Nezuko Kamado: The demon Giyu spared against every rule, after seeing her protect her brother with her own body.
- Shinobu Kocho: The fellow Hashira who teases Giyu most, her needling about being disliked is her odd way of dragging him toward people.
Quick Answers
Why is Giyu's haori two different patterns?
Giyu's haori joins two keepsakes: the crimson half was his older sister Tsutako's, and the patterned half was his best friend Sabito's. Both died to demons, and he wears them in their memory.
What is Giyu's Eleventh Form?
Dead Calm is a Water Breathing form Giyu created himself. He becomes completely still and intercepts every attack within his range so fast that enemies cannot see the cuts.
Who voices Giyu Tomioka?
Giyu is voiced by Takahiro Sakurai in Japanese and by Johnny Yong Bosch in the English dub.
