Muzan is the first demon, the Demon King who created every other demon with his blood and rules them through absolute fear. Elegant, cold and endlessly self-absorbed, he hides among humans in many forms while hunting for a way to conquer the sun. He destroyed Tanjiro's family, turned Nezuko, and stands as the final enemy the entire Demon Slayer Corps exists to kill.

Appearance

Muzan most often appears as an elegant man in his apparent twenties or thirties, with pale skin, black wavy hair and piercing plum-red eyes with cat-like pupils. He dresses impeccably in Western-style suits of the era, complete with a white fedora, a modern gentleman indistinguishable from the humans he despises. That is only one face: Muzan changes form freely, appearing as a woman, a child, or other identities to run his hidden lives among humans. In true battle his body becomes something else entirely, flesh armed with whips, mouths and blades. The polish is camouflage; underneath it is a thousand-year-old predator that has never once felt safe.

Personality

Muzan is a narcissist of a kind only a millennium can grow: intelligent, cultured, and completely unable to accept imperfection, setback or blame. He murders subordinates for disappointing him, for speaking his name, for failing, occasionally for succeeding in a way that annoyed him, his demons fear him far more than they fear the Corps. His one true drive is terror of death: a sickly human life and a near-fatal cure made him a demon, and he has spent a thousand years hunting a way to conquer sunlight and become truly perfect and unkillable. Everything in the series, every demon, every massacre, the Kamado family's deaths, flows from one man's refusal to die.

Background & Story

Muzan was born in the Heian era, a frail aristocrat dying by inches of a disease that would kill him before twenty. A doctor's experimental medicine saved his life and ruined it in the same moment: it made him strong, ageless and hungry for human flesh, and weak to the sun. He killed the doctor before the cure was finished, and spent the next thousand years trying to complete it, creating demons to search for the one ingredient, the Blue Spider Lily, and later for a demon who could survive sunlight. His demons are not an army so much as a net of expendable tools. When that search crossed a charcoal seller's family in the mountains, it left one boy alive with a demon for a sister, the mistake Muzan does not yet know he made.
