Monkey D. Garp
From One Piece
Garp is a Vice Admiral of the Marines and a supporting character in One Piece, the hero who cornered the Pirate King, and Monkey D. Luffy's grandfather. Known as Garp the Fist, his bare hands are his only weapons. He is voiced by Hiroshi Naka in Japanese.
About Monkey D. Garp
Garp is a vice admiral of the Marines and a living legend known as Garp the Fist, the hero who once cornered the Pirate King himself. He is also Luffy's grandfather, and the man who left him in the mountains to be raised by bandits. Loud, cheerful and impossibly strong, Garp has turned down promotion after promotion so that nobody can tell him what to do.
Appearance
Garp is a huge, broad-chested old man with short grey hair, a grey beard, a scar over his left eye and a face usually split by a grin or a shout. He wears a Marine coat over a suit, often with a dog-head hood or mask as a joke, and snacks constantly, crackers and rice crackers disappear around him at alarming speed. His fists, dark with Haki, are more famous than most swords in the world.
Personality
Garp is loud, cheerful, blunt and allergic to rules, he has turned down promotion to Admiral again and again because admirals must answer to the Celestial Dragons, whom he despises. He loves his family fiercely and trains them brutally, convinced that pain builds pirates and Marines alike into people who can survive. Garp's tragedy is divided loyalty: the grandsons he raised chose piracy, and the Marines he served demanded he watch. His answer, usually, is to laugh, eat crackers, and punch the problem.
Background & Story
Monkey D. Garp rose through the Marines in the age of Roger, becoming the hero of the Marines for cornering the Pirate King again and again, and, in secret history, for fighting beside Roger at God Valley against the Rocks Pirates. Offered the rank of Admiral many times, he refused it all his life. He left his grandsons Ace and Luffy to be raised by the bandit Dadan in the mountains, visiting to beat them into shape with his 'fists of love' and dreams of making Marines of them. Both became pirates. When the Marines summoned Garp to the war at Marineford, the old hero sat between his duty and his family, and his choice defined the battle.
Powers & Abilities
- The Fist: Garp's Haki-coated punches are his whole arsenal, his Galaxy Impact and fist techniques can flatten towns, ships and legends without any Devil Fruit.
- Conqueror's Haki: Garp is one of the few Marines with the Haki of kings, coating his fists in black lightning like the Emperors he fought.
- Superhuman endurance: Decades of fighting the strongest pirates alive left Garp a living fortress, he has taken blows from Emperors and admirals and kept grinning.
Key Relationships
- Monkey D. Luffy: His grandson, raised on mountain training and thrown off cliffs 'to make him strong', Garp's pride in him wars with his duty.
- Portgas D. Ace: The grandson he took in at Roger's own request, hidden from the world; Garp treated him as his own blood.
- Monkey D. Dragon: His son, who became the most wanted man in the world as leader of the Revolutionary Army, to Garp's theatrical despair.
- Gol D. Roger: The Pirate King Garp cornered many times; the rivals respected each other so deeply that Roger trusted Garp with his son's life.
