Usopp

About Usopp

Usopp is the Straw Hat Pirates' sniper, a gifted marksman who can hit targets from incredible distances with his slingshot. He is a born storyteller who dreams of becoming a brave warrior of the sea, just like his father. Fear often gets the better of him, but when his friends are in danger, Usopp always finds the courage to stand and fight.

Appearance

Usopp is a lanky young man with a famously long nose, curly black hair usually kept under a bandana or cap, and big expressive eyes that widen comically when he is scared, which is often. He wears overalls or work clothes with a sniper's bag across his body, carries his slingshots and Kabuto staff-slingshot, and keeps goggles on his forehead for aiming. After two years of training he returned noticeably more muscular, with longer hair.

Personality

Usopp is a coward with a hero's timing: he lies, panics and tries to run from every fight, then stands his ground the moment a friend truly needs him. He is the crew's storyteller and inventor, a gifted craftsman who maintained their first ship and builds weapons for himself and Nami. His tall tales have a strange habit of coming true. Usopp's real growth is not losing his fear; it is learning to act while terrified, and his pride as a sniper is genuine, his aim never lies.

Background & Story

Usopp grew up in Syrup Village, the son of Yasopp, a sniper who left to sail with the Red Hair Pirates, and Banchina, who died while Usopp was young. The boy ran through the village each morning shouting that pirates were coming, a game to keep his sick mother hopeful, then a habit he could not drop. Only young Kaya believed his stories. When a real pirate plot threatened Kaya's life, Usopp fought to protect her alongside Luffy, Zoro and Nami, and set sail with them in Kaya's gifted ship, the Going Merry, determined to become a brave warrior of the sea his father would be proud of.
