Roronoa Zoro

About Roronoa Zoro

Zoro is the Straw Hat Pirates' swordsman and the first crewmate Luffy recruited. He fights with three swords at once, one held in his teeth, and trains relentlessly on his path to become the world's strongest swordsman. Fiercely loyal and almost fearless in battle, he is famous among fans for two things: his unshakable promise to his captain, and his truly terrible sense of direction.

Appearance

Zoro is a tall, heavily muscled young man with short green hair, a scar over his closed left eye and a large stitched scar across his chest. He wears a long green coat or a simple shirt with a green sash, his haramaki, holding his three katana, black trousers and boots, plus three gold earrings in his left ear. Even asleep or drinking, he looks like a man ready for a duel, and his training with enormous weights is a running sight aboard the Sunny.

Personality

Zoro is blunt, serious and almost comically bad with directions, he can get lost on a straight road. What defines him is discipline and loyalty: he trains constantly, keeps his promises absolutely, and once offered his own life to an enemy in exchange for Luffy's without hesitation. He rarely explains himself, prefers a nap and a drink to small talk, and acts as the crew's stern conscience when Luffy's kindness needs a hard edge. Underneath, he carries a childhood promise that he refuses to break.

Background & Story

Roronoa Zoro grew up in Shimotsuki Village in the East Blue, training at the Isshin Dojo. He could beat every student except the master's daughter, Kuina, who defeated him 2,001 times; the two swore that one of them would become the world's strongest swordsman. When Kuina died in an accident the next day, Zoro took up her white katana and her share of the dream. As a young bounty hunter he was captured by the Marines at Shells Town and tied up to starve, where Luffy freed him and asked him to join his crew. Zoro accepted on one condition: nothing, not even his captain, would be allowed to stand between him and his promise.

Powers & Abilities

• Three Sword Style (Santoryu): Zoro's signature style, a katana in each hand and a third gripped in his teeth, letting him attack and defend from three angles at once.
• Flying slash attacks: By swinging with enough force, Zoro launches blades of compressed air that cut enemies and walls from a distance.
• Armament and Observation Haki: Zoro hardens his swords into black blades that can cut almost anything, and senses attacks before they land.
• King of Hell style: Zoro lets his cursed sword Enma draw out his Haki to its limit, coating all three blades in dark, flame-like energy for his strongest techniques.

Key Relationships

• Monkey D. Luffy: His captain, Zoro follows Luffy's orders without question and has offered his own life for Luffy's more than once.
• Kuina: His childhood rival and the dojo master's daughter; her early death turned their shared dream into Zoro's lifelong promise, and he carries her sword.
• Dracule Mihawk: The world's strongest swordsman and Zoro's ultimate target, Mihawk humiliated him early on, then trained him for two years at Zoro's own request.
• Sanji: The crew's cook and his eternal rival aboard ship; the two argue constantly and cover each other's backs without fail in a real fight.
• Tashigi: A Marine swordswoman who looks exactly like Kuina and collects named blades from pirates, Zoro finds facing her deeply uncomfortable.
