Jinbe

Jinbe

From One Piece

Quick Answer

Jinbe is the helmsman of the Straw Hat Pirates and a main character of One Piece. A whale shark fish-man and master of Fish-Man Karate, he can steer a ship through any sea and once held the title of Warlord of the Sea. He is voiced by Katsuhisa Hōki in Japanese and Daniel Baugh in English.

About Jinbe

Jinbe is the Straw Hat Pirates' helmsman, a whale shark fish-man and master of Fish-Man Karate who can steer a ship through the wildest seas. A former Warlord of the Sea, he gave up his title and risked everything to stand beside Luffy. Calm, honourable and wise, Jinbe is the crew's steady voice of reason, and he dreams of a world where fish-men and humans live as equals.

Appearance

Jinbe is a massive, broad fish-man with blue skin, a wide mouth of sharp teeth softened by a gentle expression, black hair in a topknot and a sun-shaped tattoo on his chest from his years with the Sun Pirates. He wears patterned kimono-style clothing and wooden sandals, and moves with a calm, sumo-like weight. Even among the Straw Hats he is physically huge, yet his presence feels steady rather than threatening, until he fights.

Personality

Jinbe is honourable, patient and wise, the crew's elder statesman, who thinks in terms of duty, debts and the long consequences of a rash act. He treats promises as sacred and gratitude as a debt that must be repaid, which is how a former Warlord ended up pledging himself to a rookie captain. Jinbe's dream is bigger than himself: the peaceful coexistence of fish-men and humans, the hope his captain Fisher Tiger and Queen Otohime both died for. He is quietly funny, too, mostly because he answers Luffy's madness with total, formal sincerity.

Background & Story

Jinbe grew up in the Fish-Man District of Fish-Man Island, a rough orphanage quarter, and rose through the royal Neptune Army before joining Fisher Tiger's Sun Pirates, a crew of freed slaves who refused to kill even their enemies. After Tiger's death, Jinbe accepted the title of Warlord of the Sea to protect his island and free its prisoners, and served until he resigned rather than fight in the war against Whitebeard. Imprisoned beside Ace, he was freed by Luffy during the breakout, fought beside him at Marineford, and later helped save Fish-Man Island with the Straw Hats. When Jinbe finally settled his old loyalties, he joined Luffy's crew as helmsman, the post he had promised to take.

Powers & Abilities

  • Fish-Man Karate: Jinbe's martial art strikes through the water in and around a body, his blows land inside opponents and can hurl the sea itself as a weapon.
  • Fish-Man Jujutsu: By grabbing the water as if it were cloth, Jinbe throws currents, waves and sea pillars with his bare hands.
  • Master helmsman: No one steers like Jinbe: he rides tsunami-sized waves, threads warships through storms and treats a ship's wheel as an extension of his body.
  • Armament and Observation Haki: Jinbe's hardened blocks have stopped blades and burning blows, and his battle sense comes from decades at the top of the sea.

Key Relationships

  • Monkey D. Luffy: His captain, Jinbe promised to join once his old duties were settled, and kept the promise at the cost of everything he had built.
  • Fisher Tiger: The Sun Pirates' captain and Jinbe's hero, whose refusal to hate humans shaped Jinbe's whole life.
  • Portgas D. Ace: A friend he made over five days of battle and later a prison mate; Jinbe swore to protect Ace's little brother in his place.
  • Arlong: A former Sun Pirates crewmate whose cruelty toward humans Jinbe opposed, Jinbe carries responsibility for ever letting him loose on the East Blue.
  • Edward Newgate: Whitebeard, whose flag protected Fish-Man Island for decades; Jinbe's gratitude to him was the first loyalty he had to settle before joining Luffy.
