Kaido

About Kaido

Kaido is the captain of the Beasts Pirates and one of the Four Emperors, feared as the strongest creature in the world. His Devil Fruit lets him transform into a giant eastern dragon that can level cities from the sky. In a one-on-one fight, the world says to always bet on Kaido, a legend built on surviving executions, battles and falls that would kill anyone else.

Appearance

Kaido is a mountain of a man, over seven metres tall, massively muscled, with long wild black hair, a flowing moustache, a dragon-scale tattoo down his left arm and a single horn on his head. He wears an open purple coat, a rope belt like a sumo champion and carries a huge spiked club, Hassaikai. In dragon form he becomes a colossal serpentine azure dragon that fills the sky, breathing fire over whole towns.

Personality

Kaido is a drunken, brutal warlord who swings between laughter, tears and murderous rage, sometimes within one speech. He respects strength absolutely, despises weakness, and is bored by a world he believes has become too soft; his hobby of attempting suicide as entertainment sums up a man who cannot find anything able to kill him. Yet Kaido is no fool: he built an empire in Wano over twenty years, and his twisted code does honour brave opponents, the rarer they are, the more he enjoys them.

Background & Story

Kaido was born in the Vodka Kingdom and sold to its military as a child soldier, then escaped to piracy, apprenticing on the legendary Rocks Pirates before building his own legend. Captured and executed by the Marines and rival pirates again and again, sentenced to death forty times, he survived every attempt, and the world settled on its rule: in a one-on-one fight, always bet on Kaido. Over twenty years ago he allied with Wano's shogun Orochi, seized the country, and ruled it as a weapons factory from the island of Onigashima, waiting for the great war he believed would finally give his life, and death, meaning.

Powers & Abilities

• Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon: Kaido transforms into a colossal eastern dragon or a dragon-man hybrid, flying by walking on clouds he creates, and breathing blasts of fire, wind blades and lightning.
• Hassaikai and Thunder Bagua: His spiked club, swung with Conqueror's Haki coating, delivers the Thunder Bagua, a blow so fast and heavy it once felled Luffy in a single strike.
• Unkillable body: Kaido's skin and endurance are legendary: falls from sky islands, executions and battles with Emperors have all failed to end him, leaving barely a scar.

Key Relationships

• Monkey D. Luffy: The young pirate who invaded his country and challenged his throne, the first opponent in years Kaido genuinely enjoyed fighting.
• Yamato: His child, who idolises Kaido's enemy Oden and rebelled against him, the most painful thorn in the Emperor's empire.
• Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom): A fellow Emperor and old crewmate from the Rocks era; their alliance united two of the sea's greatest monsters.
• Kozuki Oden: The samurai Kaido fought twenty years ago whose scar is the only one on Kaido's body, Oden's shadow haunts Wano and Kaido alike.
• King: His right-hand man and closest subordinate, a lunarian who has served Kaido since they escaped a government facility together.
