About Yuta Okkotsu

Yuta Okkotsu is the hero of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, a timid boy haunted by Rika, the powerful cursed spirit of his childhood friend who died in an accident. Taken in by Tokyo Jujutsu High, he learns to control Rika's enormous power instead of fearing it. Gojo counts him among the few students who could one day stand beside him.

Appearance

Yuta is a lanky young man with messy black hair, dark eyes and, when he first appears, deep shadows under them from years of fear and isolation. He wears a distinctive white version of the Tokyo Jujutsu High uniform with a high collar, and carries a katana in a case over his shoulder, a sword he trained with to channel his power safely. As he grows into his strength his posture straightens and the tired look fades. When Rika manifests, she towers behind him: a huge, pale, skeletal cursed spirit whose size makes Yuta look small by comparison.

Personality

Yuta begins as a frightened, apologetic boy who believes his existence endangers everyone near him and quietly wishes he could disappear. What changes him is not power but people: classmates who treat him as a friend, and a teacher who tells him he deserves to live. Under the shyness sits real steel, once someone he cares about is threatened, Yuta's fear turns into cold, frightening resolve, and his cursed energy answers. He stays gentle and polite even as a special grade sorcerer, which makes his rare fury unsettling. His whole story is a boy learning that being loved and being dangerous do not have to be opposites.

Background & Story

Yuta's childhood friend Rika Orimoto died in a traffic accident in front of him when they were children. Unable to accept her death, Yuta unconsciously cursed her spirit, binding her to him as a monstrous special grade apparition that attacked anyone who threatened or bullied him. Isolated and terrified, he was discovered by the jujutsu world, which wanted him executed, until Satoru Gojo intervened and enrolled him at Tokyo Jujutsu High instead. There, with Maki, Toge and Panda as his first real friends, Yuta trained with the katana and learned the truth about Rika's curse and how to face it. The timid boy who wanted to die became one of only four special grade sorcerers, trusted with missions across the world.

• Reverse cursed technique: Yuta can heal himself and even other people with positive energy, a rare skill most sorcerers never learn.
• Katana and cursed tools: Trained by Maki, Yuta fights skilfully with a katana charged with cursed energy and can draw stored cursed tools from Rika.
