Makarov Dreyar
From Fairy Tail
Makarov Dreyar is a supporting character in Fairy Tail, the tiny, ancient Third Master of the Fairy Tail guild, a Wizard Saint whose Giant magic and Fairy Law guard the family of strays he has spent a lifetime gathering. He is voiced by Shinpachi Tsuji in Japanese and R. Bruce Elliott in English.
About Makarov Dreyar
The third master of Fairy Tail, a tiny, elderly wizard whose Giant magic lets him grow to enormous size. Makarov treats every member of the guild as his own child, shields them from the Magic Council's anger and spends much of his time apologising for the damage they cause. Beneath the comedy is one of Fiore's Ten Wizard Saints, ready to spend his own life, through the ultimate spell Fairy Law, to keep his children safe.
Appearance
Makarov is a very short elderly man with a bald head ringed by white hair, a thick white moustache and kind, heavy-lidded eyes. He usually wears a loose orange shirt, shorts and sandals, holiday clothes on one of the ten strongest wizards on the continent, and carries a staff. A white coat with the Fairy Tail emblem marks formal occasions. In battle the joke ends: his Giant magic swells him to the size of a building, a titan swatting warships aside.
Personality
Makarov is a mischievous old grandfather, drinking, leching mildly, dodging the Magic Council's damage bills, wrapped around an absolute core: his guild members are his children, and he will spend his life for any one of them without calculation. His philosophy is the guild's soul: do what you believe is right, treat comrades as family, and let the future look after itself. He is wise in the way of a man who has buried masters and friends, and his rare anger, when someone truly harms his 'brats', is one of the most frightening things in the series.
Background & Story
Makarov was born into Fairy Tail's second generation, son of one of its early members, and was named master at forty by the dying Second Master. He has led the guild for over forty years: raising orphans like Natsu, Laxus and Erza, expelling his own son Ivan for darkness, and holding a Wizard Saint's seat while the Council fined him for his children's rampages. He disbanded the guild once to save it, faced Alvarez's empire at the head of his family, and gave everything a master can give. Fairy Tail's members call many people strong; there is only one they call Gramps.
Powers & Abilities
- Giant: Makarov's signature magic enlarges his body to enormous size with strength to match, grappling dragons and warships bare-handed.
- Fairy Law: One of Fairy Tail's three grand spells: a blinding light that destroys everyone the caster truly considers an enemy, and no one else.
- Master-level elemental magic: Decades of study give him command of fire, lightning and defensive barriers far beyond ordinary wizards, plus the authority of a Wizard Saint.
Key Relationships
- Natsu Dragneel: One of his strays, the dragon boy Makarov raised, scolded and trusted with the guild's future.
- Laxus Dreyar: His grandson; their bond survived Laxus's rebellion and remains the old man's deepest pride and wound.
- Erza Scarlet: His right hand in all but title, the S-Class wizard he trusts to hold the guild when he cannot.
- Mavis Vermillion: The First Master, whose spirit and teachings Makarov inherited and guards.
