Laxus Dreyar
From Fairy Tail
Laxus Dreyar is a supporting character in Fairy Tail, an S-Class wizard wielding Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic, Makarov's grandson, whose rebellion against the guild became the making of him. He is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi in Japanese and Patrick Seitz in English.
About Laxus Dreyar
An S-Class wizard and Master Makarov's grandson, whose body holds a Lightning Dragon Slayer lacrima. Arrogant about strength, Laxus once tried to seize the guild by force in the Battle of Fairy Tail and was expelled for it. His exile changed him: he returns again and again when Fairy Tail faces extinction, fighting as its protector rather than its master, and quietly earning back his family's trust.
Appearance
Laxus is a tall, heavily muscled man with slicked-back blond hair, orange eyes and a lightning-bolt scar across his right eye. He wears a long dark coat, often with a fur-trimmed purple shirt beneath, and sound pods over his ears playing the rock music he prefers to most conversation. The black Fairy Tail mark is on his left chest. In battle lightning pours off him constantly, and Dragon Force brings scales and crackling armour of pure electricity.
Personality
For years Laxus was the guild's storm cloud: too strong to argue with, too proud to listen, quietly convinced that Fairy Tail had gone soft under his grandfather. The Battle of Fairy Tail was that belief with the safety off. He forced his own guildmates to fight each other for his amusement and called it reform. Losing taught him what Makarov never could. The bonds weren't the weakness. They were the whole point. The Laxus who comes back from exile doesn't apologise prettily and he still can't do sentiment out loud. He just shows up. Every time. Usually with lightning.
Background & Story
Laxus was a sickly child until his father Ivan implanted a Dragon Lacrima in him, granting Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic at the cost of his health and, eventually, his father's place in the guild. Raised as Makarov's grandson and Fairy Tail's heir, Laxus grew resentful as the old man's guild turned gentle, and finally staged a coup, the Battle of Fairy Tail, forcing guildmates to fight each other for his crown. Natsu and Gajeel stopped him; Makarov expelled him. Laxus wandered, returned uninvited to fight for Fairy Tail at Tenrou Island, and earned his way back the slow way: showing up, every time, when the guild needed thunder.
Powers & Abilities
- Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic: Lacrima-granted dragon magic of lightning, Laxus wreathes himself in electricity, moves as a bolt, eats lightning and strikes with a dragon's force.
- Lightning Dragon's Roar: A breath attack of raw lightning with city-block reach.
- Fairy Law (attempted): His grandfather's ultimate spell, which judges enemies by the caster's heart, Laxus's failed casting revealed that, deep down, he saw no enemies in the guild at all.
- Red Lightning: A crimson lightning born of his own blood and will, strong enough to break through magic that nullifies ordinary lightning.
Key Relationships
- Makarov Dreyar: His grandfather and the master he rebelled against, their love for each other is the wound and the cure of his whole arc.
- Mirajane Strauss: A fellow S-Class wizard and childhood guildmate; their easy rapport steadies the guild's strongest tier.
- Natsu Dragneel: The opponent who beat him and taught him what the guild actually was, now a comrade he backs without hesitation.
