Story & Plot

Momo Ayase believes in ghosts because her grandmother is a spirit medium, but she thinks aliens are nonsense. Her classmate Ken Takakura, nicknamed Okarun, believes the exact opposite. To settle the argument, Momo visits an alien hotspot while Okarun enters a haunted tunnel. Both are proved wrong in the worst way: Momo is abducted by the Serpo aliens and awakens psychic powers, while Okarun is cursed by the Turbo Granny, a yokai who steals something precious from him and lends him her terrifying speed.

With Turbo Granny's spirit eventually trapped in a lucky-cat doll, the two teenagers hunt for Okarun's missing 'golden balls' while every ghost, alien and cryptid in Japan seems to find them first. Classmates Aira and Jiji get pulled into the chaos, gaining powers and curses of their own, as the battles grow from haunted tunnels to a cursed house, a vengeful spirit and a full-size kaiju attack. Underneath the madness, Momo and Okarun's feelings keep growing, if the monsters ever give them a quiet moment.

Why Watch Dandadan

  • Ghosts versus aliens in the same fight, yokai, UFOs and cryptids collide every episode.
  • Science SARU's animation turns chases and battles into pure, colourful chaos.
  • Creepy Nuts' opening 'Otonoke' won Best Anime Song at the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards.
  • Momo and Okarun's slow-burn romance gives the madness a warm, funny heart.
  • Emotional gut-punches hide inside the comedy. The Acrobatic Silky story is famous for it.

Who Is It For?

Dandadan is rated TV-MA in the US, so it is for older teens and adults. Expect fast, violent monster fights, strong language, crude jokes, some sexual humour and scary yokai designs, it is much rougher than its bright colours suggest.
