Turbo Granny
From Dandadan
Turbo Granny is a main character in Dandadan, a legendary yokai who haunted a tunnel, cursed Okarun and stole something precious from him, before her defeat left her spirit trapped inside a lucky-cat doll. She is voiced by Mayumi Tanaka in Japanese and Barbara Goodson in English.
About Turbo Granny
Turbo Granny is a legendary yokai who haunted a tunnel, cursed Okarun and stole something precious from him. After her defeat, her spirit ends up trapped inside a lucky-cat doll, where she stays as the group's foul-mouthed houseguest. She runs at a hundred kilometres an hour, insults everyone, and, very reluctantly, helps the teenagers fight worse monsters than herself.
Appearance
In her true form, Turbo Granny is a terrifying old woman spirit with a huge head, wild hair, long limbs and a mouth built for biting, a yokai designed by nightmare. For most of the story, though, she appears as a small, round maneki-neko lucky-cat doll with a granny's scowl, after her spirit is sealed inside it. The doll form is ceramic-cute and completely at odds with her voice and language, which emerge from it at full volume. Watching a lucky cat swear, scheme and demand food is the Ayase household's daily entertainment.
Personality
Turbo Granny is crude, greedy, foul-mouthed and proud, a centuries-old spirit with a gambler's manners and a loan shark's heart. She insults everyone as a reflex and complains about everything except dinner. But she keeps her bargains, hates being in anyone's debt, and her contempt has a strange fairness to it: she respects nerve and despises cowardice in gods and children alike. Living as a doll in the Ayase house is humiliating, and her slow, never-admitted softening toward the teenagers is one of the series' running pleasures.
Background & Story
Turbo Granny is a legendary yokai who haunted a tunnel, famous among spirits for her speed and her habit of cursing those who entered her territory. When Okarun stumbled into her tunnel, she cursed him and took his golden balls, then lost the rematch: Seiko's planning and the teenagers' nerve beat her in a game of tag, and her spirit ended up sealed inside a lucky-cat doll. Stripped of her body and most of her freedom, Turbo Granny becomes the Ayase household's foul-mouthed houseguest: insulting everyone, demanding the best food, and, very reluctantly, and only when it suits her, lending the teenagers her knowledge of the spirit world against worse monsters than herself.
