Tsunade

About Tsunade

Tsunade is one of the legendary Sannin and the greatest medical ninja in the Hidden Leaf Village. Her healing skill is matched by frightening physical strength. After years away from the village, she returns to become the Fifth Hokage, leading the Leaf through hard times while training Sakura and watching over Naruto's generation with a gambler's fearless heart.

Appearance

Tsunade is a striking woman who appears to be in her twenties, blonde hair in twin tails, a violet diamond on her forehead and a green gambling haori over her clothes, though she is actually in her fifties, holding her youth with a permanent transformation technique. She wears her grandfather's crystal necklace for most of the story, and her presence fills any room: a Hokage's authority backed by punches that split streets.

Personality

Tsunade is blunt, short-tempered, fond of sake and catastrophically unlucky at gambling, her one reliable bet is that when she finally wins, something terrible is coming. But Tsunade's hard shell was built over real grief: she lost her little brother and her lover in the wars, and her fear of blood once ended her career. Taking the Hokage's seat was her way of carrying their dreams instead of running from them, and as a leader she is decisive, protective and utterly unwilling to sacrifice her people, the standard every later Hokage is measured against.

Background & Story

Tsunade is the granddaughter of the First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, and one of the Third Hokage's three legendary students. In the Second Great War she revolutionised ninja warfare by insisting every squad field a medic, and became the world's greatest healer, then lost her brother Nawaki and her lover Dan to the same wars, developed a terror of blood, and left the village to drink and gamble away a fortune, with her apprentice Shizune in tow. When Jiraiya and Naruto came to drag her home as the Fifth Hokage, she refused, until Naruto's resemblance to both men she lost, and his impossible Rasengan bet, dragged her back to life. She took the hat and never flinched again.

• Medical ninjutsu, peerless: Tsunade heals injuries other medics call hopeless, operates on crushed organs and writes the rules of battlefield medicine the whole world uses.
• Creation Rebirth and Strength of a Hundred: The diamond seal on her forehead stores vast chakra; released, it regenerates her body continuously, healing wounds as fast as they are dealt.
• Katsuyu summoning: Her slug summon Katsuyu can split into thousands of copies, carrying Tsunade's healing chakra across an entire army at once.

• Jiraiya: Her teammate of fifty years, the only man who could insult her to her face and live; his loss is her deepest wartime wound.
• Sakura Haruno: Her apprentice, whom she trained as her successor in both medicine and strength, her proudest work.
• Dan Kato and Nawaki: Her lover and her little brother, both lost to war; their shared dream of becoming Hokage is the one Tsunade finally carried home.
• Shizune: Her loyal attendant and first apprentice, who stayed beside Tsunade through her worst years and runs her office still.
