Orochimaru

Orochimaru

From Naruto

Quick Answer

Orochimaru is a supporting character in Naruto, a legendary Sannin who turned rogue in his obsession with learning every jutsu and escaping death. Snake-like in body and mind, he is the first great villain of Naruto's generation. He is voiced by Kujira in Japanese and Steve Blum in English.

About Orochimaru

Orochimaru is one of the legendary Sannin who turned away from the Hidden Leaf to chase forbidden knowledge. Obsessed with learning every technique and escaping death itself, he experiments on others without mercy and develops a deep interest in Sasuke's Sharingan. With his snake-like appearance and colder mind, he becomes the first great villain Naruto's generation must face.

Appearance

Orochimaru is a tall, unnaturally pale man with long black hair, golden snake-like eyes with purple markings, and a smile that never reaches warmth. He wears simple robes with a purple rope belt, the Sound Village's mark, and moves like something boneless. His bodies change across the story, since he steals new ones, but the eyes, the voice and the long tongue are always his.

Personality

Orochimaru is a scientist without a conscience: curious, patient and utterly indifferent to the lives his experiments consume. War orphaned him and taught him that everything human is fragile; his answer was to refuse fragility itself, to learn every technique, live forever, and watch the world turn like a windmill. He is courteous, theatrical and quietly funny, a villain who treats heroes as interesting specimens. What makes him endure as a character is that the story never fully redeems or kills him, it simply keeps him, like a snake in the village walls, watching.

Background & Story

Orochimaru was a prodigy of the Third Hokage's legendary team, but the wars left him obsessed with death. Denied the Hokage's seat and caught experimenting on Leaf ninja, he fled the village and founded his own, the Hidden Sound, as a laboratory with an army. His obsession fixed on the Uchiha's Sharingan: he attacked the Leaf during the Chunin Exams, killed his own teacher, and marked Sasuke with a curse seal, grooming the boy as his next body. Sasuke turned on him first, but Orochimaru is nearly impossible to kill completely, and his knowledge made him too valuable for the world's heroes to simply discard.

Powers & Abilities

  • Body stealing and immortality: Orochimaru transfers his soul into new host bodies, shedding injuries and age, each stolen body is a step in his escape from death.
  • Snake summoning and techniques: He summons giant snakes, including the boss Manda, sheds his skin to heal, extends his body like rubber and strikes from a mouth full of snakes and blades.
  • Curse marks: His bite brands followers with curse seals containing his chakra and enzymes, power at the price of his influence, and a pathway for his return.
  • Reanimation Jutsu (Edo Tensei): Orochimaru perfected the forbidden technique that binds the souls of the dead to living vessels, the jutsu that let him duel his teacher with the first two Hokage as weapons.

Key Relationships

  • Sasuke Uchiha: The vessel he groomed and the student who surpassed and struck him down, Orochimaru later chose, oddly, to watch Sasuke's path rather than obstruct it.
  • Jiraiya: His former teammate and friend, who spent decades trying to bring him back, the failure Jiraiya ranks as his life's greatest.
  • Tsunade: His other teammate, he once offered to revive her loved ones in exchange for her healing, the cruelest bargain in the series.
  • Kabuto Yakushi: His right hand and spy, a medic as brilliant and rootless as Orochimaru himself, and his eventual heir in the shadows.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi: His teacher, the Third Hokage, who loved him, spared him once, and died sealing his arms to stop him.
