Jiraiya

About Jiraiya

Jiraiya is one of the three legendary Sannin, famous across the ninja world for his power, his spying network and his travel books. This cheerful, frog-summoning master becomes Naruto's mentor and teaches him some of his most important techniques. Beneath the jokes and bad habits sits a wise teacher who believes a student will one day change the world.

Appearance

Jiraiya is a tall, broad man with waist-length spiky white hair, red lines running from his eyes down his cheeks, and a forehead protector engraved with the kanji for 'oil'. He wears a green travelling outfit under a red vest, wooden sandals, and carries a giant scroll on his back. In Sage Mode his nose warts, his eyes turn toad-like and two elder toads perch on his shoulders, the goofy exterior falling away into something ancient.

Personality

Jiraiya is a clown on purpose: lecherous, theatrical, introducing himself with kabuki poses on top of a giant toad, and forever 'researching' his romance novels. The performance hides a lifetime of failure he openly admits, he could not save his teacher, his student, or his best friend, and a refusal to let those failures have the last word. Jiraiya's real legacy is belief: he travelled the world searching for the student a prophecy promised would change it, and taught every student he had to never give up. Naruto's whole philosophy is Jiraiya, passed down.

Background & Story

Jiraiya was a talentless loudmouth on the team of the Third Hokage, alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru, the three who would be named the legendary Sannin after surviving a battle with Hanzo of the Rain. Wandering after the war, Jiraiya trained three Rain orphans, wrote novels, built a spy network, and kept watch on Orochimaru and the Akatsuki from the shadows. He returned to the Leaf to find his late student's son, Naruto, his own godson and namesake from his first novel, and spent two and a half years training him on the road. When the Akatsuki's leader surfaced in the Rain Village, Jiraiya went alone to face a god, to buy the world its one warning.

Powers & Abilities

• Toad summoning: Jiraiya summons the toads of Mount Myoboku, from the colossal Gamabunta, who fights beside him as an equal, to messenger toads the size of a hand.
• Rasengan: Jiraiya mastered Minato's Rasengan and taught it to Naruto the only way Naruto learns: by doing, with balloons, bets and stubbornness.
• Sage Mode: Gathering nature energy with the toad elders fused to his shoulders, Jiraiya gains immense strength, sensing and jutsu power, an imperfect but devastating form.
• Fire, earth and oil techniques: Jiraiya fights with fire blasts, swamps that swallow armies, oil floods and his own hair as needles, shields and spears, a lifetime's bag of tricks.

Key Relationships

• Naruto Uzumaki: His godson and student, the boy named after Jiraiya's own novel hero, who inherited his creed and his dream.
• Tsunade: His teammate of fifty years, the woman he loved, teased and trusted above all others; their bond anchors the Sannin story.
• Orochimaru: His best friend and fellow Sannin, whose fall into darkness Jiraiya blames himself for not stopping.
• Minato Namikaze: His student, the Fourth Hokage, Jiraiya's proudest teaching and deepest loss.
• Nagato (Pain): Another student he believed in, facing what Nagato became is Jiraiya's final mission and his final message to the world.
