About Otonari-san
Otonari-san, literally 'the neighbour', is the mysterious girl who lives next door to Sasaki. Quiet and hard to read, she watches his comings and goings with unusual interest, and she seems to know far more about the strange powers gathering around him than an ordinary neighbour should. Her true identity and goals are among the series' running mysteries, and Sasaki has learned to treat her politeness with polite caution in return.
Appearance
Otonari-san is a young girl with a quiet, watchful presence, most often seen around Sasaki's apartment building, sitting outside, waiting, or simply there when he comes home. Her stillness is her most noticeable feature: in a series full of loud supernatural factions, she observes in silence.
Personality
Otonari-san is polite, reserved and difficult to read. She says little, notices everything, and keeps her attachment to Sasaki, the neighbour who brings her food and looks out for her, mostly unspoken. Around her, ordinary neighbourliness and deep supernatural mystery occupy the same small space, and Sasaki has learned to return her politeness with polite caution.
Background & Story
Otonari-san lives alone next door to Sasaki and spends much of her time outside her apartment because of problems at home; Sasaki, characteristically, responds by feeding her and keeping an eye out. As supernatural factions multiply around him, the neighbour girl's own circumstances draw stranger attention, in Season 2, the demon Abaddon recruits her as his apostle, pulling the quiet girl next door into the same dangerous game as everyone else around Sasaki.
Key Relationships
- Sasaki: Her next-door neighbour, who brings her food and watches out for her, and who she watches just as closely in return.
- Abaddon: The demon who recruits Otonari-san as his apostle in Season 2, binding her fate to the supernatural war around Sasaki.
