About Licht

Licht is the leader of the Eye of the Midnight Sun and of the Elf Tribe, a gentle sword-and-light magic user whose people were wiped out by humans long ago. His grief and rage at that massacre drive the elves' return and their war on the Clover Kingdom. Yet the full truth of what happened to his people is more complicated than simple revenge.

Appearance

Licht is a slender elf of otherworldly beauty, with long pale-blond hair, pointed ears and calm golden eyes marked by the elves' facial tattoos. He wears the white and gold clothing of his tribe, and his Sword Magic manifests blades of light at his command. His grimoire, a four-leaf clover like Yuno's, became a legend in itself, after his death it fell into the hands of a devil and was reborn as a five-leaf grimoire of despair, the book Asta would one day carry.

Personality

Licht wanted something that sounds simple and was, in his time, almost unthinkable: for elves and humans to actually understand each other. He loved his tribe. He loved a human woman. He put his whole future on a wedding that was supposed to prove the two peoples could share a world. What he got was a massacre wearing his wedding's clothes, a devil's plot that used his own body as its weapon, and five hundred years of being remembered wrong. The grief in the reincarnated Licht is real, but so is what's underneath it. Given one clear moment at the end, he spends the last of his strength the way the young leader would have: protecting everybody's future, elves and humans alike.

Background & Story

Five hundred years before the story, Licht led the elf tribe in the land that became the Clover Kingdom. His friendship with Lemiel, a human prince, and his love for Lemiel's sister Tetia crossed the era's deepest line; their wedding was meant to unite two peoples. Instead, a devil's plot turned the celebration into a massacre: the elves were slaughtered, their mana harvested, and Licht, to stop his own body being used as the devil's vessel, transformed into a colossal demon that Lemiel was forced to destroy. The souls of the elves, Licht's included, waited centuries for reincarnation, and the lie of that day, that humans alone were to blame, fuelled the Eye of the Midnight Sun's war.

Powers & Abilities

• Sword Magic: Licht conjures blades of light and wields them with an elf's speed and mana, the original owner of the swords Asta later inherits, still charged with his techniques.
• Immense mana and sensing: As the elves' leader he holds mana beyond human captains, sensing and commanding the natural mana of the world itself.

Key Relationships

• Asta: The boy who carries Licht's grimoire reborn as the five-leaf book of anti-magic, and wields Licht's own swords, an inheritance neither of them chose.
• Yuno: The young mage in whom an elven soul of Licht's tribe reincarnated, his unborn child's soul, carried into the new age.
