Asta is a loud, determined orphan from Hage Village who was born with no magic at all in a world where magic decides everything. What he has instead is a five-leaf grimoire, huge anti-magic swords and a body trained to its limit. As a Black Bull, he refuses to give up on his dream of becoming the Wizard King.

Appearance

Asta is short for his age, 155 cm, but years of relentless training have given him a strikingly muscular build that often surprises people who meet him. He has messy ash-blond hair, bright green eyes and a loud, expressive face that shows every emotion he feels. After joining the Black Bulls he wears the squad's black robe over a light tunic, with a headband marked with the squad's emblem and a small pouch at his waist that holds his tattered grimoire. When he draws on his devil's power, his right arm turns black and clawed and dark wings spread from his back.

Personality

Asta is famously loud, stubborn and almost impossible to discourage. Told his whole life that a magicless commoner could never amount to anything, he answers every doubt with more training and more shouting. He is quick to anger when friends are insulted, quick to forgive, and completely unable to walk past someone in trouble. His cheerfulness hides a serious work ethic, he has done thousands of push-ups and sword swings a day since childhood, and a simple belief that effort can beat talent. He is also famously dense: years of Sister Lily turning down his daily marriage proposals have never once dented his confidence.

Background & Story

Asta was left as a baby on the steps of the church in Hage, a poor village on the edge of the Clover Kingdom, on the same day as another orphan, Yuno. Raised by Father Orsi and Sister Lily, the two boys grew up as brothers and rivals, both swearing to become the Wizard King. Asta's problem was simple: unlike everyone else in the kingdom, he had no magic at all. At the grimoire ceremony at age fifteen, no book chose him, until a thief attacked Yuno, and a filthy five-leaf clover grimoire appeared for Asta, holding swords that erase magic. At the Magic Knight entrance exam, only one captain raised a hand for the magicless boy: Yami Sukehiro of the Black Bulls, the kingdom's roughest squad. Since then Asta has fought to prove that a peasant with no magic can still climb to the very top. Mission by mission, the magicless recruit has built a reputation as the knight who charges in exactly when a fight looks hopeless, and as the loudest believer in the idea that anyone, from any village, can rise.

Powers & Abilities

• Anti Magic: A rare power that erases other magic on contact, the reason a boy with no mana can cut through the spells of the kingdom’s strongest mages.

  

• Demon-Slayer Sword: His first and largest sword. Its flat side can deflect spells, and the Anti Magic along its edge slices magic apart.

  

• Demon-Dweller Sword: A slimmer sword that absorbs magic and releases it as Anti Magic slashes, it can even borrow the magic of Asta’s allies.
• Demon-Destroyer Sword: Its Causality Break ability undoes the effects of spells and curses that have already been cast, not just the spells themselves.
• Demon-Slasher Katana: Captain Yami’s katana, lent to Asta and coated in his Anti Magic; it can cut only what Asta chooses to cut.

  

• Black Asta: By letting Anti Magic flow through his own body, Asta gains devil-like features and wings, with a huge boost in speed, strength and senses.

  

• Devil Union with Liebe: Asta fully merges with Liebe, the devil inside his grimoire, as an equal partner, his strongest form, with Anti Magic at its peak.

  

Key Relationships

• Yuno: His childhood friend from the same church and his lifelong rival, both boys swore an oath to become the Wizard King.
• Noelle Silva: A royal-born Black Bulls squadmate who once could not control her powerful water magic; the two push each other to grow stronger.
• Yami Sukehiro: The Black Bulls’ captain, the only captain who wanted Asta, and the man whose example Asta most wants to surpass.
• Liebe: The devil living inside Asta’s grimoire and the source of his Anti Magic, less a master than a partner and brother in arms.
