Junpei Hyuga

About Junpei Hyuga

Junpei Hyuga is Seirin's captain and shooting guard, the team's clutch three-point specialist, at his most accurate exactly when a game is on the line. Strict, loud and secretly sentimental about his collection of historical figurines, he carries the memory of Seirin's first Winter Cup failure and the promise he made to Kiyoshi. His 'Barrier Jumper' and his nerve under pressure make him the senior Seirin's younger players trust when the scoreboard turns cruel.

Appearance

Hyuga is 178 cm with dark hair, brown eyes and rimless glasses that give him a plain, studious look off court. He wears Seirin's number 4 jersey as captain. The glasses hide two modes: the calm senior who organises the team, and 'clutch mode', when his eyes narrow, his voice turns rough and the polite captain starts talking, and shooting, like a streetfighter. His shooting form is clean and repeatable, built from thousands of practice shots rather than natural genius.

Personality

Hyuga is responsible, sharp-tongued and fiercely competitive. He runs Seirin with a captain's discipline, scolding the first-years and backing them in the same breath. He collects historical figurines, especially from the Sengoku period, with a fan's passion he tries to hide. His nerve is his defining trait: the worse the situation, the calmer his shot. That steadiness was earned through failure; Hyuga once nearly gave basketball up entirely, and the memory of Kiyoshi dragging him back is why he never lets a teammate quit on his watch.

Background & Story

Hyuga played basketball in middle school with Izuki and Riko, then lost his love for the game after a crushing defeat and tried to quit. Kiyoshi, founding Seirin's new basketball club, refused to let him go and talked him back, and Hyuga became the young team's captain. In Seirin's first year the team reached the Winter Cup preliminaries and was destroyed, and Hyuga made a promise with Kiyoshi to come back stronger. When Kuroko and Kagami arrive, Hyuga's leadership and his three-point shooting, sharpened by special training, including his Barrier Jumper, turn Seirin from a hopeful young club into a team that can stand in a national final.

Powers & Abilities

• Clutch Three-Point Shooting: Hyuga's accuracy rises under pressure, his threes in the final minutes of close games are Seirin's most reliable late weapon.
• Barrier Jumper: A shooting technique where Hyuga creates space from a defender with a sudden step and a raised barrier of his body, releasing the shot cleanly over pressure.

Key Relationships

• Teppei Kiyoshi: The friend who talked him back into basketball and co-founded Seirin with him, their promise drives his captaincy.
• Riko Aida: His coach and friend since middle school; Hyuga trusts her training completely and hides his feelings for her badly.
• Shun Izuki: His backcourt partner and oldest teammate, whose terrible puns Hyuga pretends to hate.
• Taiga Kagami: The first-year ace he captains, Hyuga's steadiness balances Kagami's fire.
