Whis

Whis

From Dragon Ball Super

Quick Answer

Whis is a supporting character in Dragon Ball Super, Beerus' attendant, martial arts teacher and an angel, far stronger than the god he serves. Calm, elegant and fond of desserts, he trains Goku and Vegeta with amused patience. He is voiced by Masakazu Morita in Japanese and Ian Sinclair in English.

About Whis

Whis is Beerus's attendant, martial arts teacher and keeper, a calm, elegant angel who is far stronger than the god he serves. He fetches Beerus's meals, rewinds time when destruction goes too far, and trains Goku and Vegeta with amused patience. Polite to a fault and fond of Earth's desserts, Whis watches universe-shaking battles the way other people watch weather, mildly interested and never worried.

Appearance

Whis is a tall, slim, blue-skinned angel with white hair swept up in a tall pompadour style, a floating halo ring around his neck, and serene, half-lidded eyes. He wears the angels' formal dress, a maroon and black robe with gold and orange trim in Universe 7's colours, and carries a long staff topped with a black orb, through which he sees everything and travels the universe. He moves like a dancer and eats like a delighted tourist.

Personality

Whis is politeness perfected over eons: soft-spoken, curious, fond of good food and gentle teasing, and almost impossible to surprise, he watches universe-ending battles the way one watches weather. As an angel he is bound by law to neutrality, guiding and training but never fighting his universe's wars, and that detachment is real: Whis will rewind a catastrophe but not prevent the lesson. What warmth he shows comes out sideways, in the training he offers Goku and Vegeta, the desserts he schemes to obtain, and his quiet, centuries-long care of a god nobody else could live with.

Background & Story

Whis has served as Beerus' attendant for hundreds of millions of years, feeding, training and managing the most dangerous being in Universe 7, and quietly ranking among the strongest beings in all universes, as angels do. It was Whis who first told Beerus of the Super Saiyan God dream's meaning, Whis who carried him to Earth, and Whis who recognised what Goku and Vegeta might become. When the two Saiyans asked for training, the angel agreed, in exchange for a steady tribute of Earth's best food, and began teaching them the first steps toward Ultra Instinct, the technique of the angels themselves.

Powers & Abilities

  • Ultra Instinct mastery: Whis' body moves entirely on its own, dodging and striking without thought, the angels' state, which he demonstrates by sparring with gods while holding a conversation.
  • Time rewind: Whis can rewind time by up to three minutes to undo a catastrophe, a mercy he uses sparingly, and only for events, never for lessons.
  • Staff of sight and travel: His staff views anything in the universe and carries him and others across universes at speeds no ship can match.
  • Resurrection and healing: As an angel, Whis can restore the dead to life and heal wounds with a gesture, powers he deploys rarely, and always on his own terms.

Key Relationships

  • Beerus: His god and charge of hundreds of millions of years, Whis serves, feeds, teases and, when necessary, manages him.
  • Son Goku: His most promising student, whose instinct-driven fighting Whis recognised as Ultra Instinct's seed before Goku did.
  • Vegeta: His other student, Whis respects the prince's discipline and trains him toward a different road than Goku's.
  • Bulma: His supplier of Earth's finest food, their arrangement of desserts for god-training is the universe's strangest contract.
  • Grand Priest: His father, the attendant of Zeno and the strongest of the angels, Whis speaks of him with a son's respect.

Quick Answers

What is Whis's main power?

Ultra Instinct mastery: Whis' body moves entirely on its own, dodging and striking without thought, the angels' state, which he demonstrates by sparring with gods while holding a conversation.

Who voices Whis?

Whis is voiced by Masakazu Morita in Japanese and by Ian Sinclair in the English dub of Dragon Ball Super.

Is Whis stronger than Beerus?

Yes. Whis is Beerus' martial arts teacher and an angel, a class of beings above Gods of Destruction. Beerus himself admits Whis outclasses him; Whis once knocked Beerus out with a single chop to stop a rampage. Angels simply are not permitted to fight seriously in mortal affairs.
