Tatewaki Kuno

About Tatewaki Kuno

Tatewaki Kuno is the captain of Furinkan High's kendo club, a grandiose swordsman who speaks like a samurai drama and loves both Akane Tendo and the 'pigtailed girl', Ranma's female form, without ever suspecting they are connected. Wealthy, delusional and utterly sincere, he is less a villain than a force of nature: no rejection, defeat or obvious fact has ever dented his confidence for long.

Appearance

Kuno is a tall, handsome teenager with dark hair, usually in his school uniform or kendo gear, carrying a wooden sword (bokken) everywhere. He poses and speaks like a hero of samurai drama at all times.

Personality

Kuno is noble in his own mind: poetic, honourable, generous, and completely delusional. Rejection does not register, evidence does not register, and his confidence survives every defeat intact. He is sincere in everything, which somehow makes it worse.

Background & Story

Tatewaki Kuno is the heir of the wealthy Kuno family and Furinkan's kendo captain, who ruled that no one could date Akane Tendo without defeating her, a rule Akane defeated boys under every morning. Ranma's arrival gives him a rival he vows to crush, while Ranma's female form gives him a second love he pursues in parallel, buying photographs of her from Nabiki. His war with Ranma is half rivalry, half performance, and entirely endless.

Powers & Abilities

• Kendo mastery: Kuno is Furinkan's kendo captain, able to strike with a wooden sword fast enough to split the air and shatter stone.

Key Relationships

• Akane Tendo: His first declared love, defended and pursued with total disregard for her opinion.
• Ranma Saotome: His hated rival, and, in female form, his other declared love, a fact he never connects.
• Kodachi Kuno: His younger sister, whose madness even he occasionally notices.
• Nabiki Tendo: His supplier of photographs, at prices only a Kuno would pay.
