Otto is a travelling merchant blessed, and cursed, with a divine protection that lets him understand every living creature's language. Rescued by Subaru from a cellar and a bad fate, he becomes the Emilia camp's internal affairs chief and Subaru's most practical friend. His talent for paperwork, negotiation and timing quietly saves the camp again and again.

Appearance

Otto is a slim young man with grey-green hair and nervous eyes, dressed in the practical travelling clothes and cloak of a small-time merchant, usually with ledgers or luggage close at hand. He looks like the universe's favourite victim, bandits, employers and fortune all pick on Otto, and his posture in a crisis suggests he knows it. Then the crisis continues, and Otto is somehow still standing, having quietly arranged the solution.

Personality

Otto is anxious, self-deprecating and far braver than he believes. His blessing made him a childhood outcast, a boy who could hear every insect and animal is not a comforting playmate, and failure followed him into business. What Subaru gives him is a place where his real talents count: languages, negotiation, paperwork, timing and an instinct for people. Otto becomes the Emilia camp's internal affairs chief and Subaru's most practical friend, the one who says the sensible thing while everyone else is being heroic.

Background & Story

Otto Suwen was a third son of a merchant family whose divine protection, the ability to understand and speak with all living creatures, isolated him as a child and ruined him as a merchant more than once. Rescued by Subaru from a Witch Cult cellar and a bad fate in one of the loops, Otto threw in his lot with the Emilia camp, rising from travelling oil merchant to its chief of internal affairs. His talent for negotiation, languages and timing quietly saves the camp again and again, from the Sanctuary to the flooded city of Priestella.
