Beatrice

About Beatrice

Beatrice is the spirit librarian of the mansion's forbidden library, a small, imperious girl in a frilly dress who has waited 400 years for 'that person' under a contract she cannot explain. She hides loneliness behind drills of sarcasm, in fact. Her slow bond with Subaru becomes one of Re:Zero's most rewarding relationships, I suppose.

Appearance

Beatrice looks like a young girl of about eleven with blonde hair in elaborate drill curls, blue eyes and a frilly pink and red dress with a small crown, a doll-like appearance that clashes wonderfully with her haughty old-soul manner. She is almost always found in the forbidden library, seated among towering shelves with a book in hand, and she can move the library's doorway to whichever mansion door she pleases.

Personality

Beatrice is proud, sarcastic and desperately lonely, in roughly that order on the surface and the reverse underneath. She ends sentences with 'I suppose' and 'in fact', dismisses visitors as nuisances, and has organised four centuries of waiting into a personality. Her contract binds her to the library until 'that person' arrives, and the not-knowing who it is has become the quiet tragedy of her life, which makes her slow, prickly bond with Subaru, who keeps choosing her, the real thing she was waiting for.

Background & Story

Beatrice is an artificial spirit created 400 years ago by the Witch of Greed, Echidna, and placed in charge of the forbidden library in what became Roswaal's mansion, a storehouse of the Witch's knowledge. Her contract ordered her to guard the library until the arrival of 'that person', without telling her who it would be. For four centuries she waited, reading, while generations of the Mathers family passed outside her door. Then a dying boy started falling through her library at inconvenient moments, and refused to stop coming back.

Powers & Abilities

• Yin magic mastery: Beatrice is a master of yin (shadow) magic, including Minya's frozen time-crystals and powerful defensive and offensive spells.
• Door Crossing: She controls the forbidden library's position, connecting its door to any door in the mansion at will.
• Spirit constitution: As an artificial spirit she does not age, and sustains herself on mana drawn from the mansion and later from her contractor.

Key Relationships

• Subaru Natsuki: The boy who kept invading her library and eventually chose her, becoming the partner her 400-year wait was for.
• Puck: A fellow artificial spirit from Echidna's circle, whom she treats like an exasperating older brother.
• Roswaal L Mathers: The mansion's master, whose family has maintained her library for generations under Echidna's old arrangements.
