Puck

About Puck

Puck is Emilia's partner, a cat-like great spirit of fire who treats world-ending power like a side job to being her overprotective father. Playful and fluffy by day, he is contracted to destroy the world if Emilia dies, and has done terrifying things in loops Subaru would rather forget. His past with Emilia is its own story, told in The Frozen Bond.

Appearance

Puck's everyday form is tiny and adorable: a palm-sized grey and white cat-like spirit with long ears, a gold earring and a squeaky voice, who floats around Emilia and sleeps in her hair. His true form is the opposite, a colossal beast of ice and fury, the Beast of the End of the Frozen World, large enough to freeze a city solid simply by manifesting in anger.

Personality

Puck is playful, teasing and devoted to Emilia with his whole ancient heart. By day he is a mascot: joking, napping and rating Subaru's efforts with cheerful cruelty. But his contract and his love have the same clause, if Emilia dies, Puck will end the world in ice, and he means it literally. He keeps his past, his creation and his real feelings folded away behind the cuteness, and the rare moments he drops the act are among the series' most frightening.

Background & Story

Puck is an artificial great spirit created by the Witch of Greed, Echidna, four centuries ago, and later contracted to the half-elf Emilia after she woke from the frozen forest of Elior. By their contract he is active from nine in the morning to five in the evening, spends the rest of the time sleeping inside her crystal, and serves as her partner, guardian and family. The cheerful cat who rides in her hair is also the insurance policy Roswaal counts on: a world-ending beast leashed only by one girl's life.

Powers & Abilities

• Great spirit of fire (ice manifestation): Puck commands immense freezing magic, paradoxically wielding ice through his fire attribute, enough to blanket regions in eternal winter.
• Beast of the End form: When Emilia dies, Puck takes his true giant beast form and begins the world's end, as his contract demands.
• Healing and spirit arts: Day to day he supports Emilia with healing, barriers and spirit magic, and can read the thoughts and feelings of those around him.

Key Relationships

• Emilia: His contractor and daughter in all but name; her safety and happiness are his entire world, literally.
• Subaru Natsuki: The boy he teases mercilessly and slowly comes to trust with Emilia's heart.
• Beatrice: A fellow artificial spirit from Echidna's circle, whom he treats like a little sister.
