Subaru Natsuki

About Subaru Natsuki

Subaru is the hero of Re:Zero, an ordinary shut-in teenager thrown into a fantasy world with one terrible gift: whenever he dies, time rewinds and only he remembers. He has no strength or magic talent, so he wins with information, alliances and refusal to quit. Every victory costs him deaths nobody else will ever know happened.

Appearance

Subaru is a Japanese teenager with short black hair, sharp brown eyes and an ordinary build he himself calls unimpressive. He arrives in Lugunica still wearing his black and white tracksuit, which becomes his trademark outfit, later adding a cloak and the battered look of someone who has been through far more than his face shows. He has no armour, no heroic build and no visible power at all, in a world of knights and mages, Subaru looks exactly like what he is: a normal kid far from home.

Personality

Subaru is loud, theatrical and painfully earnest. He hides fear and self-loathing behind jokes, grand poses and borrowed catchphrases, and his devotion to the people he loves is intense enough to worry them. He is not brave by nature, he is terrified, constantly, but he has decided that other people's lives matter more than his terror, and he acts on it again and again. His flaws are real: possessiveness, pride and a martyr complex he has to be rescued from as often as he does the rescuing.

Background & Story

Subaru Natsuki was a shut-in teenager in modern Japan who stepped out to a convenience store one night and found himself summoned to the fantasy kingdom of Lugunica, with no explanation and no way home. He quickly learned the rules of his situation the hardest way: when he dies, he returns to an earlier point in time, keeping every memory while the world forgets. Unable to tell anyone about this curse, he attached himself to the half-elf Emilia, moved into Roswaal's mansion, and began using loop after painful loop of information to protect the people around him.

Powers & Abilities

• Return by Death: Subaru's curse and only real power: when he dies, time rewinds to a fixed checkpoint and only he keeps the memories of what happened.
• Shamac: A basic shadow magic spell, Subaru's gate is weak and damaged, so Shamac mostly serves as a smokescreen to blind and confuse enemies.
• Witch's scent and authorities (later): His connection to the Witch of Envy marks him with a scent the cult can track; over the story he unwillingly gains Witch Cult authorities, beginning with the Unseen Hand.
• Whip and parkour (trained): With no magic talent, Subaru trains his ordinary body, learning whip fighting and movement skills from the mansion's staff and knights.

Key Relationships

• Emilia: The half-elf candidate he devotes himself to protecting; his feelings for her drive his first loops and much of his growth.
• Rem (Re:Zero): The demon maid whose devotion to Subaru becomes the emotional core of the series, and whose fate drives his longest quest.
• Beatrice: The library spirit whose 400-year wait Subaru answers; their bond becomes one of his most important partnerships.
• Ram: Rem's twin sister, whose merciless teasing hides how closely she watches over the mansion, and Subaru.
• Roswaal L Mathers: His employer and Emilia's backer, a patron whose hidden agenda makes him part ally, part puppet-master.
