Cell
From Dragon Ball Z
Cell is a supporting character in Dragon Ball Z, a bio-android built by Dr. Gero's computer from the cells of the greatest fighters alive. He absorbs Androids 17 and 18 to reach perfection, then holds a tournament to decide the world's fate. He is voiced by Norio Wakamoto in Japanese and Dameon Clarke in English.
About Cell
A bio-android created by Dr. Gero's computer from the cells of Goku, Vegeta, Frieza and other great fighters. Cell travels back in time and absorbs Androids 17 and 18 to reach his perfect form, then holds the Cell Games to test his power against the world. Arrogant, patient and theatrical, he wants not just victory but an audience for it, and he finally finds an opponent he cannot bully in Gohan.
Appearance
Cell changes completely across his forms: a hunched, insect-like creature with a beak and a needle tail; a bulky semi-perfect brute; and finally Perfect Cell, tall, sleek and eerily handsome, with a black and green exoskeleton, purple sections like royal armour, wing-like shoulder plates and a calm, perfect face. His voice shifts with him, from guttural hunger to smooth, theatrical arrogance.
Personality
Cell is Gero's revenge given manners: intelligent, patient and theatrical, with a connoisseur's pride in his own perfection. He does not rage like Frieza, he schedules. Having reached the form he was designed for, Cell holds a televised tournament, builds a ring, sets rules and waits, because victory without an audience bores him. His flaw is the Saiyan in his cells: he craves a worthy challenge so much that he deliberately provokes Gohan's hidden power, certain nothing can exceed his own perfection. It is the most elegant self-destruction in the series.
Background & Story
Cell was grown in secret by Dr. Gero's computer in the years after Gero's death, combining cells taken from Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Frieza and King Cold into a designed 'perfect being'. His own timeline's future had no androids left to absorb, so Cell killed that era's Trunks, stole his time machine and travelled back to the main timeline, emerging as an egg, maturing underground, and hunting Androids 17 and 18 across the world, draining whole cities through his tail on the way. Absorbing first 17, then 18, Cell achieved his perfect form and announced the Cell Games: ten days, one ring, and Earth's strongest, or the end of the world.
Powers & Abilities
- Absorption: Cell drinks the life energy of victims through his tail in his early forms, and swallows Androids 17 and 18 whole to evolve toward perfection.
- Every fighter's techniques: Built from the cells of Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Frieza and others, Cell can use their moves, the Kamehameha, the Special Beam Cannon, Frieza's discs, and improves on several.
- Regeneration: With Piccolo's cells, Cell regrows lost limbs and survives almost any wound, even returning from a single surviving nucleus of cells, stronger than before.
- Cell Juniors: Perfect Cell spawns seven small, vicious copies of himself, each strong enough to battle a Z Fighter, his cruel warm-up act for the Cell Games.
- Perfected power: In his perfect form Cell matches and then exceeds the Super Saiyans of his era, with speed, technique and reserves that only Gohan's hidden rage finally answers.
Key Relationships
- Son Gohan: The boy whose hidden power Cell deliberately provoked, and the opponent who finally exceeded his perfection.
- Son Goku: The man Cell was designed to kill; Goku's calm confidence at the Cell Games unsettles Cell more than any attack.
- Android 18: The final component of his perfection, swallowed to complete him, and freed by Gohan's blow at the worst possible moment for Cell.
- Android 17: His first absorption, whose capture completed Cell's semi-perfect form.
- Future Trunks: The Trunks of Cell's own timeline, murdered for his time machine, and the Trunks of this one, whom Cell's return humiliates and enrages.
