Majin Buu

Majin Buu

From Dragon Ball Z

Quick Answer

Majin Buu is a supporting character in Dragon Ball Z, an ancient magical being sealed for millions of years and released by the wizard Babidi. He changes form again and again, from a childlike candy-lover to a force of pure destruction. He is voiced by Kōzō Shioya in Japanese and Josh Martin in English.

About Majin Buu

An ancient magical being created millions of years ago and sealed away until the wizard Babidi releases him. Buu changes form many times, the childlike, candy-loving Fat Buu, the evil Super Buu and the pure-destruction Kid Buu. Unpredictable and nearly impossible to kill, he can turn people into sweets, copy techniques instantly and regenerate from almost nothing. His friendship with Mr. Satan shows there is kindness buried inside the chaos.

Appearance

Buu is pink in every form, with a single antenna-like head tentacle and holes across his skin that vent steam when he is angry. Fat Buu is round and childlike, dressed in a vest, cape and baggy trousers like a genie. Super Buu stretches tall and muscular, his face sharper and crueller. Kid Buu is small, lean and feral, a shrieking pink whirlwind with no words at all. All of them share the same rubbery, impossible body that treats damage as a suggestion.

Personality

Buu is not one personality but several, and the forms are the story: Fat Buu is a toddler with godlike power, playful, food-obsessed, capable of appalling violence and genuine friendship in the same hour. The evil that splits from him becomes steadily more focused: Super Buu is a cunning hunter; Kid Buu is destruction without a mind to reason with. What saves the world, in the end, is the kindness inside the chaos, a friendship with the fraud hero Mr. Satan that teaches the monster to hesitate, and survives in him after every other form is gone.

Background & Story

Majin Buu was created by the wizard Bibidi millions of years before Dragon Ball Z, a magical being of pure chaos who destroyed hundreds of planets and absorbed the gods who fought him, growing softer and stranger with the gentle Grand Supreme Kai inside him, before Bibidi sealed him in a ball hidden on Earth. His son Babidi finally revived him during the World Tournament era, gathering energy from Earth's fighters. Buu's release split the world's defenders, absorbed its strongest warriors one by one, and destroyed the Earth itself, until Goku and Vegeta faced his original, purest form on the world of the Kais, with the whole universe's energy behind one last Spirit Bomb.

Powers & Abilities

  • Regeneration and rubber body: Buu's magical body stretches, splits, absorbs blows and regrows from vapour, only total annihilation at the molecular level can end him.
  • Turn into candy: Buu's head beam transforms people and objects into sweets and food, his favourite way to 'fight' and eat at once.
  • Absorption: By engulfing victims in his own flesh, Buu absorbs their power, techniques and intelligence, changing form with every meal.
  • Instant technique copying: Buu learns attacks by seeing them once, he reproduces the Kamehameha and other techniques mid-battle.
  • Healing magic: Uniquely among the saga's villains, Buu can heal others completely with his magic, a power from the kind god absorbed long ago.

Key Relationships

  • Mr. Satan (Hercule): The comic 'champion' who befriended Fat Buu with games and food, the most important friendship in the Buu saga, and the reason part of Buu stays good.
  • Son Goku: The opponent Kid Buu was born to fight; Goku respects Buu's power so openly that he wishes him reborn as a good person.
  • Vegeta: The prince who finally set his pride aside against Buu, and whose respect Buu's final battle earned in return.
  • Babidi: The wizard who released and briefly commanded him; Buu killed him the moment a better suggestion arrived.
  • Son Gohan: The fighter Super Buu hunted and absorbed at the peak of Gohan's strength, the meal that made Buu nearly unstoppable.
