About Son Goten

Goku and Chi-Chi's second son, born after his father's death in the Cell Games. Cheerful and carefree where his brother Gohan is serious, Goten becomes a Super Saiyan at a remarkably young age without even trying. Together with his best friend Trunks he forms the fused warrior Gotenks, whose overconfidence and invented techniques are as dangerous to friends as to Majin Buu. Goten brings the Buu saga much of its comedy and heart.

Appearance

Goten is a small boy who looks like a miniature of his father, the same wild black hair and orange gi in child size. As a teenager he changes his hairstyle deliberately, tired of being mistaken for Goku. In fusion, Gotenks appears as a cocky, muscular kid with a halo of black-and-purple hair and Metamoran fusion clothing. Everything about young Goten radiates sunshine: he smiles constantly, flies everywhere, and treats world-ending battles as the best game ever.

Personality

Goten is sweet, simple and fearless in the way only a child raised by stories of heroes can be. Where Gohan is a scholar pushed into fighting, Goten is a fighter's son who loves it, yet he is gentler than Trunks, the follower in their schemes, and easily the most good-natured Saiyan ever born. His innocence is his gift to the saga: the Buu arc's darkest hours keep cutting back to two small boys playing at being heroes, and the fusion they invent, part power, part pure playground imagination, is Goten's spirit exactly.

Background & Story

Goten was born after the Cell Games, in the peaceful years his father did not live to see, Goku died before Goten's birth, and the boy grew up on stories of him, trained playfully by Chi-Chi. He turned Super Saiyan so young and so casually that he cannot remember doing it, sparring with his mother. When Goku returned for one day at the World Tournament, Goten finally met his father, and hours later, with Majin Buu loose, the seven-year-old and Trunks became Earth's emergency plan: taught the Fusion Dance, the two boys merged into Gotenks, a warrior as powerful as he was hilariously overconfident.

Powers & Abilities

• Super Saiyan: Goten achieved the golden form as a small child without rage or training trauma, a sign of how strong Saiyan blood had become on Earth.
• Fusion: Gotenks: By performing the Fusion Dance in perfect sync with Trunks, Goten merges into Gotenks, a warrior far stronger than either boy, with invented techniques to match.
• Kamehameha and flight: Trained from toddlerhood, Goten flies, fires ki blasts and performs the Kamehameha with a child's ease.
• Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack (as Gotenks): Gotenks' signature invention: ghostly copies of himself that explode with devastating force on contact, deadly, theatrical and totally made up on the spot.
