Tome Kurata

About Tome Kurata

Tome Kurata is the president (and for a long time, only member) of the Telepathy Club, dead set on contacting aliens before graduation. When her club is threatened with disbandment, Mob's Body Improvement Club takes over the room, and somehow she stays, dragging everyone along on her UFO hunts. Loud, determined and secretly soft-hearted, Tome embodies the ordinary dreams Mob's extraordinary world keeps orbiting around.

Appearance

Tome is an energetic girl with short dark hair, bright eyes and the intense expression of a true believer mid-pitch. She is usually in her school uniform with the Telepathy Club's paraphernalia close at hand, UFO magazines, star charts, club posters she made herself. Her design is deliberately ordinary next to the espers around her, which suits her perfectly: she is the dreamer without powers in a world full of them.

Personality

Tome is loud, stubborn, melodramatic and completely sincere, a fantasist with a project plan. She guilt-trips, schemes and speechifies to keep her club alive, but the longing underneath is genuine: she wants proof that the world is bigger and stranger than the everyday, which in Mob's world is both true and cruelly distributed to everyone except her. Her friendship with Mob, the boy who has everything she dreams of and wants none of it, is one of the series' most human threads.

Background & Story

Tome founded the Telepathy Club to pursue her one great goal: making contact with aliens before she graduates. For most of her school career the club's only real member is Tome herself, and when the school moves to disband it, the club room is handed to the Body Improvement Club, with Mob, its newest member, becoming her unlikely last hope of keeping the dream alive. Her UFO obsession drags the whole cast on mountain expeditions and eventually gives Tome the story's most bittersweet school-days arc: what happens to a dream when the dreamer has to grow up.

Key Relationships

• Shigeo Kageyama: The esper she recruits as her club's last hope, the boy with real psychic powers who joins a club about faking contact with aliens, to both their benefits.
• Musashi Gouda: The Body Improvement Club captain who takes her club room, and lets her keep using it, to her loud, ungrateful relief.
• Ichi Mezato: A fellow pursuer of the school's strange stories; the reporter and the believer circle the same mysteries from opposite directions.
