About Katsuya Serizawa
Katsuya Serizawa spent fifteen years as a shut-in, terrified of his own uncontrollable psychic power, until Claw's boss gave him an umbrella and a purpose, as a bodyguard and member of the Ultimate 5. Facing Mob shows him he was being used, and he chooses a new life: school at night, honest work at Spirits and Such, and learning to trust his own heart.
Appearance
Serizawa is a broad, heavyset man with a round face, short dark hair and an initially unkempt, withdrawn look that matches his years indoors. In his Claw days he is rarely seen without the umbrella his boss gave him, held like a shield. After joining Spirits and Such he cleans up, suit, shorter hair, steadier posture, and by night school he looks like exactly what he is becoming: an ordinary working adult, which for him is a triumph.
Personality
Serizawa is gentle, anxious and painfully sincere, with a shut-in's social rustiness and a deep hunger to be treated as a person. He is not weak-willed so much as unpractised at willing anything for himself, Claw's obedience was easier than choice. His growth into a man who studies, works and eventually gives orders of his own is quiet and hard-won, and his loyalty to Reigen and Mob, the people who offered him a life instead of a use, is absolute.
Background & Story
Serizawa's psychic power manifested uncontrollably in childhood, hurting people around him, and he withdrew completely, spending some fifteen years shut in his room, terrified of himself. Toichiro Suzuki recruited him with an umbrella to block out the world and a place in Claw's Ultimate 5, the first purpose Serizawa ever had, and a cage dressed as rescue. Sent against Mob during Claw's assault on the city, Serizawa meets the first esper who treats his fear as understandable rather than useful. After Claw falls, he chooses the harder ordinary path: night school, and a job at Spirits and Such under Reigen.
Powers & Abilities
- Psychic Barriers and Blasts: Even untrained, Serizawa's raw output rivals top espers, he generates powerful barriers and energy blasts, channelled for years through the umbrella he carried everywhere.
- Power Control (learned): His real achievement is control: learning to use his strength deliberately and proportionately instead of sealing it away or letting it explode.
Key Relationships
- Shigeo Kageyama: The esper who defeats him without contempt, Mob's understanding is the first handhold Serizawa gets out of Claw.
- Toichiro Suzuki: Claw's boss, who gave him an umbrella and a purpose that kept him useful, dependent and afraid.
- Arataka Reigen: His new employer, who treats him as a capable adult and pushes him toward school, work and self-respect.
- Sho Suzuki: A fellow member of Claw's inner circle whose rebellion against his father contrasts with Serizawa's obedience.
