Ritsu Kageyama

Ritsu Kageyama

From Mob Psycho 100

Quick Answer

Ritsu Kageyama is a main character of Mob Psycho 100, Mob's younger brother, a popular, athletic top student who seems to have everything Mob lacks. Underneath, he hides envy, guilt and fear around his brother's power, until his own psychic abilities finally awaken. He is voiced by Miyu Irino in Japanese and Max Mittelman in English.

About Ritsu Kageyama

Ritsu is Mob's younger brother: popular, athletic and top of his class, everything Mob is not. For years he hid a mix of admiration, guilt and fear of his brother's power, and even framed a classmate while posing as 'White T-Poison'. When his own psychic powers finally awaken, Ritsu must face what he did and learn to stand beside Mob instead of in his shadow.

Appearance

Ritsu is a neat, good-looking boy with straight black hair and sharp features, visibly the polished version of his brother, with a student council member's tidy uniform and controlled posture. Next to Mob's bowl cut and blank expression, Ritsu reads as the 'successful' brother in every group shot. When his powers awaken, the animators give him Mob's glowing eyes and crackling aura, drawn slightly rawer and less controlled, a visual echo he has wanted and feared his whole life.

Personality

Ritsu is intelligent, disciplined and outwardly perfect, and privately eaten by an inferiority complex pointed the wrong way: he feels ordinary next to his brother's godlike power while everyone else envies Ritsu. He can be calculating and cold when pursuing a goal, as the student council scandal shows, but his conscience is strong, and his guilt over framing a classmate haunts him. At heart he is protective to a fault, of Mob most of all, and his journey is learning that his brother never needed him to be powerful, only honest.

Background & Story

Ritsu grew up in Mob's shadow in the strangest way: he is better than his brother at everything, grades, sports, popularity, except the one thing that matters most to him. As a small child Ritsu saw what Mob's power could do when it slipped, and he has carried admiration, guilt and quiet fear of his brother ever since. On the student council he helps run a campaign against delinquents that slides into framing an innocent student, with Ritsu posing as the legend 'White T-Poison', the guilt of which eats at him. When psychic powers finally awaken in him, helped along by an esper research lab's experiments, Ritsu has to face both his envy and his brother honestly for the first time.

Powers & Abilities

  • Telekinesis (awakened): Ritsu's awakened esper power lets him move objects, bend spoons his brother's style, and fight with barriers and blasts, modest beside Mob's, but growing and used cleverly.
  • Keen Intellect: Top of his class and a sharp strategist, Ritsu plans fights and investigations several steps ahead of louder, stronger people.

Key Relationships

  • Shigeo Kageyama: His older brother, the person Ritsu most admires, most envies and most wants to protect, all at once.
  • Sho Suzuki: The Claw defector who rescues and recruits Ritsu against his father; the two boys recognise each other's family burdens instantly.
  • Dimple: The spirit who possesses Ritsu for a time and goads his worst impulses, an unwilling roommate in his own body.
  • Arataka Reigen: His brother's boss, whom Ritsu distrusts openly even while relying on him in every crisis.
