Shota Aizawa

Shota Aizawa

From My Hero Academia

Quick Answer

Shota Aizawa, the pro hero Eraser Head, is a supporting character in My Hero Academia, Class 1-A's homeroom teacher whose Erasure Quirk cancels other Quirks for as long as he keeps his eyes on their user. He is voiced by Junichi Suwabe in Japanese and Christopher Wehkamp in English.

About Shota Aizawa

Shota Aizawa, the hero Eraser Head, is Class 1-A's homeroom teacher. His Quirk, Erasure, cancels other Quirks while he stares at their user, and he fights with a binding cloth and dry patience. He looks exhausted and acts strict, expelling students he judges hopeless, but few teachers at U.A. care about their class more deeply than he does.

Appearance

Aizawa is a tall, lean man with long, unkempt black hair, a stubbled jaw and perpetually tired eyes with dark bags under them. He dresses in plain black with tall boots, and around his neck and shoulders he wears coils of his pale capture scarf, which hides much of his lower face when he fights. Yellow goggles protect his eyes in battle. He is frequently shown curled in a yellow sleeping bag, napping wherever he happens to be.

Personality

Aizawa is dry, blunt and allergic to wasted effort, his catchword for foolishness is 'irrational'. He opens the year by threatening to expel the lowest-ranked student and has a record of expelling whole classes he judged to have no potential. It is not cruelty: he believes false hope kills, and that a teacher's job is to be honest about the brutal standard hero work demands. Beneath it he is one of the most protective teachers at U.A. repeatedly putting his own broken body between villains and his students without a second thought.

Background & Story

As a U.A. student himself, Aizawa doubted a Quirk like his, useless against some enemies and dependent on his own body, could make him a hero, and he built a fighting style around that weakness: stealth, a binding capture weapon, and ending fights before they start. He became an underground hero who avoids the media, and reluctantly took up teaching at his old school. As homeroom teacher of Class 1-A he inherits the most incident-prone class in U.A.'s history, targeted by villains again and again in its first year. Aizawa's response is constant: erase the threat, shield the students, and keep teaching, his expulsion threats evolve into a fierce, stubborn refusal to give up on any of them.

Powers & Abilities

  • Erasure: By looking at a person, Aizawa cancels their Quirk for as long as his gaze holds; blinking ends the effect, and overuse leaves his eyes painfully dry.
  • Binding Cloth: Aizawa fights with a scarf of steel-wire alloy woven with carbon nanofibres, which he manipulates to bind, throw and immobilise opponents.
  • Hand-to-Hand Combat: Because Erasure only levels the field, Aizawa trained himself into an expert martial artist who ambushes and overpowers villains while their Quirks are off.

Key Relationships

  • Izuku Midoriya: His student, whose self-destructive early power use Aizawa confronted directly, and whose growth he quietly champions.
  • All Might: A fellow teacher whose flashy style Aizawa initially criticised; shared crises turn them into trusted colleagues.
  • Katsuki Bakugo: A student Aizawa publicly defended to the press, insisting Bakugo's fierceness is a hero's drive, not a villain's.

Quick Answers

What is Aizawa's Quirk?

Erasure. While Aizawa looks at someone, their Quirk stops working. The effect ends the moment he blinks or looks away, and it cannot erase mutant-type body features.
