Dabi
From My Hero Academia
Dabi is a supporting character in My Hero Academia, a League of Villains member whose blue flames burn hotter than ordinary fire, and who fights with a long-held grudge against hero society. He is voiced by Hiro Shimono in Japanese and Jason Liebrecht in English.
About Dabi
Dabi is a League of Villains member covered in stitched, burned skin, who fights with overwhelming blue flames hotter than ordinary fire. Calm and mocking, he treats the league's cause as a tool for his own long-held grudge against hero society and one hero in particular. Almost everything about his past is a secret he keeps for the right moment.
Appearance
Dabi is a tall, lean young man with spiky black hair, turquoise eyes and a calm, mocking expression. Large patches of his skin are burned purple and wrinkled, held to the healthy skin by surgical staples and piercings that run along his jaw, ears, arms and torso. He wears a dark, loose coat over a plain shirt with heavy boots, and his movements are lazy until the moment blue fire erupts from his hands. The stapled, patchwork look makes him one of the most recognisable villains in the series.
Personality
Dabi is cool-headed, sarcastic and openly contemptuous of heroes, whom he calls fakes living off a corrupt system. Where Shigaraki rages, Dabi smirks, he treats the League as a vehicle for his own vendetta rather than a cause, and keeps his real name and past hidden even from allies. He is patient enough to wait years for the moment of maximum damage before revealing himself. Yet his obsession has hollowed everything else out of his life; even he admits, in his bleakest moments, that he barely feels anything anymore.
Background & Story
Almost nothing about Dabi's early life is known when he first appears, deliberately. He surfaces in the wake of the hero killer Stain's arrest, drawn to the League of Villains by Stain's message that hero society is fraudulent, and quickly becomes one of its most dangerous attackers, ambushing U.A.'s students during their summer training camp. His flames are stronger than most fire Quirks but his own body cannot withstand their heat, so he fights in short, devastating bursts. What is clear from the start is the direction of his hatred: it is personal, aimed at one hero in particular and at the family that hero built, and Dabi is saving his whole story for the moment it will hurt the most.
Powers & Abilities
- Blueflame: Dabi generates blue flames far hotter than ordinary fire Quirks, hot enough to incinerate most targets almost instantly, but the heat also burns his own body.
- Flashfire Techniques: Dabi adapts the flame hero's signature concentrated-fire techniques, including jet-like blasts and walls of flame, learned from watching them his whole life.
- Cremation Ambushes: Dabi specialises in sudden, overwhelming attacks from hiding, burning escape routes first and letting his flames do the work before his body gives out.
Key Relationships
- Tomura Shigaraki: The League's leader, whom Dabi follows only as far as their goals overlap; the alliance is convenience, not loyalty.
- Endeavor: The flame hero at the centre of Dabi's entire vendetta, the target his whole life has been aimed at.
- Shoto Todoroki: Endeavor's youngest son, whose existence and suffering are bound up with the grudge Dabi carries.
- Hawks: The hero who infiltrates the League through Dabi, each man using the other in a dangerous double game.
Quick Answers
What is Dabi's Quirk?
An unnamed blue-flame Quirk, often called Blueflame. His fire burns far hotter than Endeavor's, but his body lacks resistance to it, so using it injures him too.
Who voices Dabi?
Dabi is voiced by Hiro Shimono in Japanese and by Jason Liebrecht in the English dub of My Hero Academia.
Why is Dabi covered in scars?
His own flames burned him. The purple, stapled patches across his body are skin damaged by a Quirk too hot for his body to handle.
