Ryusui Nanami

About Ryusui Nanami

Ryusui Nanami is the heir of the Nanami shipping empire and the greatest sailor of the old world, revived to captain the Kingdom of Science's ship, the Perseus. His creed is desire: he wants everything, and cheerfully declares that greed, aimed well, drags civilisation forward. Flamboyant and brilliant at the helm, Ryusui turns the voyage into his personal playground, and the Kingdom is richer for his wanting.

Appearance

Ryusui is a tall, striking 187 cm with blond hair, sharp golden-brown eyes and a captain's bearing that fills any deck he stands on. He dresses with a revived dandy's flair, a captain's coat and hat of his own design, and punctuates his declarations by snapping his fingers. Everything about him is appetite made elegant: the grin of a man who has just seen something new and already decided it will be his. At the helm of the Perseus, in a storm, he looks less like a man working than a man exactly where the world intended him to be.

Personality

Ryusui's philosophy is one word: desire. He wants everything, ships, treasure, new lands, good food, the whole world, and he refuses to apologise for it, arguing that human wanting is the engine that built civilisation in the first place. The surprising part is his generosity: Ryusui's greed is expansive, and he wants everyone else to get what they want too, which makes him a natural leader and, when he introduces money to the Kingdom, its first economist. He is flamboyant, brilliant and completely sincere, a man whose selfishness somehow loops around into making everyone around him richer.

Background & Story

In the old world Ryusui was the Nanami conglomerate's heir and its most gifted sailor, building model ships and captaining real ones while his family despaired of his appetites. When the Kingdom of Science needed to cross the ocean, Senku revived him, at a price Ryusui cheerfully set himself, to design and captain the Perseus, the stone world's first great ship. He introduces currency (the drago) to organise the Kingdom's labour, leads the voyage to Treasure Island and beyond, and becomes one of Senku's Five Wise Commanders. His wanting gives the Kingdom its horizon: Ryusui is always the first to say the next impossible destination out loud.

Powers & Abilities

• Master Seamanship: Ryusui is the finest sailor of the old world, navigation, weather reading and ship handling that make crossing a stone-world ocean possible.
• Commander's Instinct: His judgement of people and value, who wants what, and what it is worth, lets him organise labour, trade and crews like a born captain.
• Economic Drive: He introduces money to the Kingdom of Science and uses desire itself as an organising force for civilisation's growth.

Key Relationships

• Senku Ishigami: The leader who revived him, Senku channels Ryusui's greed the way he channels every force: towards the goal.
• Gen Asagiri: A fellow Wise Commander, the two read people and situations from opposite ends, words and wants.
• Ukyo Saionji: His ship's ears, Ukyo's hearing and Ryusui's seamanship guide the Perseus together.
