Ruri

From Dr. Stone

Quick Answer

Ruri is Ishigami Village's priestess in Dr. Stone and Kohaku's older sister, keeper of the Hundred Tales, the stories and warnings passed mouth to mouth for 3,700 years from Senku's own father. Frail with pneumonia, she is the reason Kohaku fights, and curing her is the Kingdom of Science's first great quest. She is voiced by Reina Ueda in Japanese and Kristen McGuire in English.

About Ruri

Ruri is Ishigami Village's priestess and Kohaku's older sister, keeper of the Hundred Tales, the stories, science and warnings passed mouth to mouth for 3,700 years from Senku's own father. Frail with pneumonia, she is the reason Kohaku fights, yet no damsel: her memory is civilisation's backup drive. Curing Ruri is the Kingdom's first great quest.

Appearance

Ruri is a slender young woman with long blonde hair, gentle blue eyes and a pale, delicate look that reflects years of illness. She wears the priestess's garb of Ishigami Village, with the rope-and-ornament dress of her office, and she moves carefully, often supported or resting. Her presence is calm and ceremonial, when Ruri recites the Hundred Tales, the whole village listens, because she is its living memory. After her cure, colour and strength return to her visibly, one of the series' quietest and happiest transformations.

Personality

Ruri is gentle, patient and far stronger in spirit than her body allows. As priestess she carries the village's most sacred duty: memorising the Hundred Tales perfectly, generation after generation, knowing they contain knowledge her people no longer understand. She bears her illness without self-pity and worries more for Kohaku, who is spending her own life carrying spring water for her, than for herself. Ruri's faithfulness to stories she cannot explain is itself a kind of science: preserving information across 3,700 years for a future she was promised would come.

Background & Story

Ruri inherited the priestess's role in Ishigami Village, memorising the Hundred Tales, the legacy of Byakuya Ishigami, who encoded survival knowledge, science and one very personal message into stories for his descendants. Her pneumonia made her the village's sorrow: Kohaku's water-carrying, the Grand Bout tournament held to find her a husband and chief, and finally Senku's entire early campaign, the antibiotics quest, all exist because of her illness. Curing Ruri proves science to the village in a single act. And when she recites the Hundred Tales for Senku, the stories complete their 3,700-year journey: the message from his father finally reaches him.

Key Relationships

  • Kohaku: Her younger sister, who devoted years of her life to carrying healing spring water for her, the sisters' bond drives the whole village arc.
  • Senku Ishigami: The boy from the Hundred Tales made real, her recitation of the tales delivers his father's legacy to him.
  • Chrome: Her childhood friend, whose love for her quietly fuels his transformation into a scientist.
