Ray is the third of Grace Field's top trio, a bookish, sharp-tongued boy who seems to know everything and care about nothing. In truth, Ray remembers what the others cannot and has been planning his own escape for years, working as Isabella's spy while secretly sabotaging her. His knowledge of the house's secrets makes him the plan's most dangerous piece.

Appearance

Ray is a lean 11-year-old with messy black hair that falls over one side of his face, often covering one dark eye, and a usually bored or unimpressed expression. He wears the white Grace Field uniform, frequently with a book in hand or under his arm. His identification number is printed on his neck like the other children's.

Personality

Ray is dry, sarcastic and brutally practical, the trio's realist. Where Emma leads with hope and Norman with plans, Ray asks what a plan will cost. He pretends not to care, but his actions are fiercely protective, especially toward Emma and Norman. He keeps secrets even from his friends when he thinks the truth would burden them, and his calm under pressure hides years of quietly carried knowledge about the house.

Background & Story

Ray has read his way through Grace Field's library and remembers far more of his early childhood than children there are supposed to. Long before Emma learned the truth about the orphanage, Ray understood what the house was, and began preparing in his own way, trading information and patience for a chance to save at least Emma and Norman. When the escape plan forms, Ray becomes its source of hard knowledge: how the house watches the children, what tools can be gathered and which comforts must be given up. His years of playing a double game make him both the plan's most useful member and the one carrying the heaviest secret into the house's final weeks.
