Nobuyuki Sugou

Nobuyuki Sugou

From Sword Art Online

Quick Answer

Nobuyuki Sugou is the executive of RCT Progress in Sword Art Online who rules ALfheim as Oberon the Fairy King, keeping Asuna caged at the top of the World Tree. He is voiced by Takehito Koyasu in Japanese and Todd Haberkorn in English.

About Nobuyuki Sugou

Nobuyuki Sugou is an executive of RCT Progress and Asuna's unwanted fiancé, chosen by her father while she lay in a coma. Inside ALfheim Online he rules as Oberon the Fairy King, keeping Asuna caged at the top of the World Tree while he secretly experiments on the minds of 300 trapped SAO survivors. Arrogant and cruel, Sugou is everything Kayaba was not: a small man abusing a borrowed world.

Appearance

Sugou is a slender man with neat brown hair, glasses and a smooth, ingratiating smile, usually in an expensive suit as an executive of RCT Progress. As Oberon, the Fairy King of ALfheim, he appears as a tall, flamboyant fairy with long blond hair, pointed ears, a crown and ornate green-and-gold robes, with large insect-like wings. The contrast is the point: the real Sugou is a forgettable middle manager of other people's genius, and Oberon is the costume he built to feel like a god.

Personality

Sugou is arrogant, entitled and cruel in the petty way of a man who has never built anything himself. He envies Kayaba's genius, resents being second, and takes his revenge on people who cannot fight back, trapped players, a comatose girl, employees. As Oberon he plays the gracious king, but the performance cracks instantly when defied: he whines, threatens and abuses his administrator powers like a child with a stolen key. He is everything Kayaba was not, Kayaba wanted a world; Sugou wants to own people, and the difference defines the Fairy Dance arc.

Background & Story

Nobuyuki Sugou was a university contemporary of Akihiko Kayaba who has lived in his shadow ever since. As an executive of RCT Progress, the company that took over the SAO servers, he was chosen by Asuna's father as her fiancé, a marriage arranged while Asuna lay in a coma after the death game. What nobody outside his lab knew: when SAO ended, Sugou diverted 300 returning players, Asuna among them, into ALfheim Online, caging Asuna at the top of the World Tree as his queen Titania while his team experimented on the trapped players' minds, research he planned to sell. His kingdom is borrowed, his title is a costume, and his whole empire rests on one trapped girl.

Powers & Abilities

  • Oberon's Administrator Powers: As ALfheim's self-crowned Fairy King, Sugou abuses game-master privileges, gravity pressure, item summoning and system commands no normal player can resist.
  • Mind-Control Research: His RCT lab experiments on the memories and emotions of 300 trapped SAO survivors, research aimed at controlling human minds, the crime at the centre of his empire.

Key Relationships

  • Asuna Yuuki: His unwanted fiancée by her father's arrangement. Sugou keeps the comatose Asuna trapped in ALfheim as his queen, against her will in every way.
  • Akihiko Kayaba: His old university rival, whose genius Sugou envied his whole career, everything Sugou owns, including ALfheim itself, is built on Kayaba's work.
  • Kirito: The boy who climbs the World Tree to take Asuna back, the kind of genuine strength Sugou can neither understand nor forgive.
