Shino Asada is the sniper Sinon, ace of Gun Gale Online, who took up shooters to conquer a real trauma: as a child she shot an armed robber, and the sound of a gun still freezes her. Cool, precise and dry-witted behind the scope, she is one of the few players who fights Kirito as an equal. Hunting the killer Death Gun beside Kirito, she faces her past head-on.

Appearance

Shino is a slim girl with short dark hair, glasses and a quiet, withdrawn expression in the real world, usually in her school uniform. As Sinon in Gun Gale Online she is transformed: teal-blue hair in a short bob with twin tails, sharp eyes behind a sniper's focus, a green-and-white combat jacket with a scarf, and the enormous anti-materiel rifle Hecate II carried across her back. In Underworld she later appears in blue as the Sun Goddess Solus's account. The difference between Shino's hunched real-world posture and Sinon's stillness behind the scope is the whole character in one image.

Personality

Sinon is cool, precise and dry-witted, a professional's calm that she built deliberately over a frightened girl. She does not perform bravery; she practises it, one tournament at a time, and her honesty about her own trauma makes her one of the most grounded people Kirito knows. She is competitive without cruelty, loyal without fuss, and one of the very few players who fights Kirito as a genuine equal and calls him out when he broods. Her friendship with him is built on mutual respect between two people carrying guilt they did not earn.

Background & Story

Shino Asada's childhood was marked by a single afternoon: at eleven, she shot an armed robber during a post office robbery, saving her mother and the staff. The aftermath (rumours, bullying and a paralysing fear of guns and even the sight of one) followed her for years. On a friend's advice she took up Gun Gale Online, a shooter VR game, as self-therapy: if 'Sinon' could be the strongest sniper in a gun game, perhaps Shino could live with guns in the real world too. She became GGO's finest sniper, and then a player calling himself Death Gun began killing players in-game in a way that seemed to kill them in reality, dragging her trauma into the open beside Kirito, who had entered GGO to investigate.

Powers & Abilities

• Hecate II: Sinon's signature weapon, a .50 calibre anti-materiel sniper rifle whose power can punch through cover and players alike, few in GGO can use it at all.
• Sniping and Prediction Lines: A master of GGO's bullet-line system, Sinon reads prediction lines and weather to land impossible long-range first shots, and dodges return fire by instinct.
• Annihilate Ray (Underworld): In Underworld, Sinon's Hecate transforms into a great bow whose charged shot, the Annihilate Ray, can destroy armies at extreme range.

Key Relationships

• Kirito: Her partner in the Death Gun investigation and one of her closest friends, two guilt-carriers who recognise each other's damage and refuse to let it win.
• Asuna Yuuki: A friend and fellow member of Kirito's circle, with whom Sinon shares the particular bond of the group's front-line women.
• Suguha Kirigaya: Leafa, a friend in ALfheim Online, where Sinon plays as a Cait Sith, the two fly together in the circle that forms around Kirito.
