Lihaku

About Lihaku

Lihaku is a good-natured military officer whose impressive build hides a simple, honest heart. Maomao roped him into her investigations early on with the promise of an introduction to a famous courtesan, and he has been a loyal, if occasionally baffled, ally ever since. His straightforward decency makes him one of the few officials Maomao trusts with dangerous errands.

Appearance

Lihaku is a big, broad-shouldered officer with an open, earnest face that broadcasts every thought he has. He wears his military uniform with pride and stands out in any room, partly his size, partly the fact that he is clearly the least scheming person in it.

Personality

Lihaku is honest, loyal and simple in the best sense: he says what he means and does what he promises. He is hopelessly in love with the courtesan Pairin and cheerfully gullible about anything connected to her, which is exactly the lever Maomao used to recruit him. In a court of plotters, his straightforward decency is a genuine strategic asset.

Background & Story

Lihaku is a military officer serving in the capital when Maomao first crosses his path. Promised an introduction to the famed courtesan Pairin of the Verdigris House, he becomes Maomao's willing muscle inside the palace's security forces, lending his rank, his access and his sword arm to her investigations. Over time his help stops being about the bargain: he becomes one of the few officials Maomao trusts with genuinely dangerous errands.

Key Relationships

• Maomao: She recruited him with a promise about Pairin and kept him with respect, he is her most reliable ally inside the military.
• Pairin: The legendary courtesan Lihaku adores from afar; his devotion to her is sincere, hopeless and a running joke of the series.
• Basen: A fellow young officer in Jinshi's service. The two earnest soldiers are often thrown into the same escort and guard duties.
