Jinshi
Jinshi is the second lead of The Apothecary Diaries, the breathtakingly beautiful official who manages the emperor's rear palace and keeps drawing Maomao into its mysteries. Presented to the court as a eunuch, he hides a close tie to the imperial family. He is voiced by Takeo Otsuka in Japanese and Kaiji Tang in English.
About Jinshi
Jinshi is the strikingly beautiful official who oversees the emperor's rear palace, using Maomao's talents to untangle its mysteries while hiding burdens of his own. Presented to the court as a eunuch, he is in truth bound to the imperial family by blood, a secret that shapes everything he does. Beneath the smiles he is sharp, stubborn and quietly devoted to Maomao.
Appearance
Jinshi is famous across the palace for a beauty that stops conversations: long dark hair, fine features and a graceful build that make many mistake him for a woman at first glance. He wears the neat robes of a high palace official and carries himself with practised elegance, every movement smooth and deliberate. His smile is his most famous feature, warm, gentle and completely calculated. When he is alone with Maomao, the polish slips: he pouts, sulks and grins like an overgrown child who has been denied a treat.
Personality
In public Jinshi is all charm, patient, soft-spoken and impossible to dislike, which is exactly the weapon he intends it to be. In private he is stubborn, theatrical and surprisingly childish, especially around Maomao, whose refusal to be impressed wounds his pride daily. He is far sharper than his pretty image suggests: he reads people quickly, plans several steps ahead, and carries the weight of his secret position with real discipline. His devotion to Maomao grows from respect for her mind into something he struggles to handle with his usual grace.
Background & Story
Jinshi is introduced as a eunuch official in charge of administering the rear palace, testing the loyalty and health of the emperor's consorts. In truth he is bound to the imperial family by blood, and the eunuch identity is a role he performs for the court, a secret that shapes his duties and his caution. Tasked with keeping order among the consorts, he notices a servant girl quietly solving the mystery of the dying imperial infants, identifies her as the apothecary Maomao, and promotes her into Consort Gyokuyou's service. From then on he feeds her case after case, partly because the palace needs her, and partly because she is the one person who looks at him and sees neither a beauty nor a rank, only a nuisance who brings her work.
Key Relationships
- Maomao: The apothecary he promoted and cannot stop teasing; she is the one person immune to his charm, which fascinates him endlessly.
- Gaoshun: His loyal aide and bodyguard, who has served him since childhood and manages both his schedule and his moods.
- Gyokuyou: The emperor's favoured consort, whose pavilion Jinshi watches over closely, and whose household gives Maomao her place in the palace.
- Ah-Duo: The former consort whose history is closely tangled with Jinshi's own hidden past.
- Basen: Gaoshun's son and a young officer in Jinshi's service, earnest to a fault in carrying out his orders.
Quick Answers
Is Jinshi really a eunuch?
That is how Jinshi is presented to the court, and it is the identity he performs in the rear palace. The series makes clear early on that there is more to Jinshi's true position and his tie to the imperial family than the court is told.
How old is Jinshi?
Jinshi's age is deliberately murky in the story: the court believes the age attached to his eunuch persona, while his real age is younger than he claims. The series treats the gap itself as part of his secret.
Who voices Jinshi?
Jinshi is voiced by Takeo Otsuka in Japanese and by Kaiji Tang in the English dub.
Why does Jinshi keep giving Maomao cases?
Jinshi recognised that Maomao's medical knowledge could solve problems nobody else in the palace could. He also simply enjoys her company, she is the only person who is never fooled by his smile.
