Basen

About Basen

Basen is Gaoshun's son, a earnest young officer who serves Jinshi with fierce loyalty and a very short supply of tact. Brought up in a clan that has served the imperial family for generations, he takes every duty deadly seriously, which makes him easy to tease and hard to fool. His growing role in Season 3 pulls him closer to the court's centre.

Appearance

Basen is a sturdy young officer with his father's solid build and a much more readable face, every duty, doubt and offence shows on it immediately. He wears his uniform as if it were armour for his pride as much as his body, and stands at attention even when nobody has asked him to.

Personality

Basen takes everything seriously: orders, honour, his clan's generations of service, and insults most of all. He is brave and utterly dependable, but rigid, the court's subtleties slide off him, which makes him easy to tease and, usefully, very hard to corrupt. Serving Jinshi in the court's centre is teaching him, slowly, that duty and flexibility can coexist.

Background & Story

Basen comes from the clan that has served the imperial family for generations, and like his father Gaoshun he entered Jinshi's service as a military officer. Where Gaoshun is silk over steel, Basen is all steel, assigned to guard and escort duties around Jinshi as the court's intrigues deepen. His growing role pulls him closer to the centre of events, where his loyalty is tested against situations no amount of earnestness can simplify.

Key Relationships

• Gaoshun: His father, the model of the perfect imperial aide that Basen is trying, in his louder way, to live up to.
• Jinshi: His master, whom Basen serves with absolute, unbending loyalty.
• Maomao: He views the apothecary with suspicion and grudging respect; her informality around Jinshi offends every instinct he has.
