Leonard Burns
From Fire Force
Leonard Burns is the captain of Special Fire Force Company 1 in Fire Force, a mountain of a man with an eyepatch and the quiet authority of the brigade's strongest generation, who was present on the night of the Kusakabe fire. He is voiced by Taiten Kusunoki in Japanese and Phil Parsons in English.
About Leonard Burns
Leonard Burns is the captain of Special Fire Force Company 1, a mountain of a man with an eyepatch, a lion's presence and the quiet authority of the brigade's strongest generation. He was present on the night of the Kusakabe fire, and has carried what he saw there in silence ever since. Dutiful, devout and immovable, Burns is a wall Shinra must one day face to reach the truth about his family.
Appearance
Burns is one of the largest men in the Fire Force: heavily built, broad as a door, with a lion-like mane of hair and an eyepatch over one eye. He wears Company 1's uniform and a priest-soldier's composure, moving slowly and speaking softly, the stillness of a man who has never needed to raise his voice or hurry. His remaining eye misses nothing.
Personality
Burns is dutiful, devout and immovable. He believes in the Temple, in order, and in carrying burdens silently, including the burden of what he saw twelve years ago at the Kusakabe house, which he has never spoken aloud. He is not a villain in his own story: he is a wall of a man who decided that some truths cost more than silence, and Shinra's journey requires going through him to test that decision.
Background & Story
Leonard Burns has served the Fire Force and the Holy Sol Temple for decades, rising to captain of Company 1, the brigade closest to the Temple's heart. Twelve years before the story he was present on the night the Kusakabe home burned, close enough to the truth of that night to be one of its keepers ever since. As Shinra's search for answers draws him toward Company 1 and the Temple, Burns stands in his path: a devout, honourable obstacle between the boy and the night that made them both.
Powers & Abilities
- Voltage Nova: Burns's third-generation ability stokes his body's internal heat in stages, massively amplifying his strength, speed and durability with each rising level.
Key Relationships
- Shinra Kusakabe: The boy from the fire Burns witnessed, Shinra's search for the truth leads, inevitably, to Burns's silence.
- Joker: Both men were shaped by the Temple's hidden world; Joker's war on its lies is aimed at everything Burns protects.
- Akitaru Obi: A fellow captain. Obi's powerless, honest firefighting is everything Burns's secret-keeping service to the Temple is not.
