Lahan

About Lahan

Lahan is an official from the La clan, Lakan's people, with a genius for numbers and absolutely no interest in anything that cannot be counted. Where his clan head sees the world as a Go board, Lahan sees it as a ledger. His obsession with Maomao is purely professional at first, her mind fascinates him, but in the La clan, every interest eventually becomes a family matter.

Appearance

Lahan is a slight, quick-eyed young man who looks perpetually as if he is doing arithmetic behind his eyes, because he is. He dresses neatly as a court official, but numbers are his real clothing: ledgers, tallies and harvest figures are never far from his hands or his conversation.

Personality

Lahan is cheerful, shameless and monomaniacal about mathematics. Taxes, grain yields, population counts, if it can be measured, he cares; if it cannot, he loses interest mid-sentence. His fascination with Maomao begins as professional admiration for a mind that works like his, and in the La clan, professional admiration has a way of becoming a family matter.

Background & Story

Lahan belongs to the La clan, the family of the strategist Lakan, and serves the court as an official specialising in finance and statistics. Where Lakan sees a Go board, Lahan sees a ledger, and his talent for spotting what the numbers hide makes him quietly powerful in a court that runs on grain and tax. His path crosses Maomao's through clan business, and her head for figures earns his instant, enthusiastic respect.

Key Relationships

• Lakan: The head of his clan, Lahan serves the great strategist while privately finding him as baffling as everyone else does.
• Maomao: A mind he admires professionally; her talent with numbers makes her, in his view, exactly the sort of person the La clan should keep close.
• Jinshi: A senior figure of the court Lahan serves. Jinshi has use for a man who can read a ledger the way Lahan can.
