King

From One Punch Man

Quick Answer

King is a main character of One Punch Man, ranked S-Class 7 and feared worldwide as the strongest man on Earth, a title built entirely on being found at the scene of Saitama's victories. In truth he is an unemployed otaku with a terrifying face and a pounding heartbeat. He is voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto in Japanese and Rich Brown in English.

About King

King is ranked S-Class 7 and feared worldwide as the strongest man on Earth, a title built entirely on being at the scene of Saitama's victories. In truth he is an unemployed otaku with a terrifying face and the 'King Engine', a heartbeat that enemies mistake for battle aura. His bluffs keep accidentally saving the world, and his gaming friendship with Saitama is the series' best-running gag.

Appearance

King is a tall, imposing man with a stern face, short blond hair and three long scars running down the left side of his face and over his eye. He wears plain street clothes, hoodies and jackets, that do nothing to soften the effect: strangers clear out of his way on sight. His most famous feature is invisible: the King Engine, the thunderous pounding of his heart that enemies hear as the battle aura of the strongest man on Earth, and which is, in truth, the sound of his terror.

Personality

King is a gentle, anxious otaku crushed inside a legend he never asked for. He is not a coward in the simple sense, he keeps showing up, keeps bluffing monsters away from crowds, and his lies routinely save people, but he lives in constant fear of exposure and death in roughly that order. His friendship with Saitama shows the real King: funny, knowledgeable, kind and unbeatable at video games, a man whose tragedy is that the world will only let him be a monster or a fraud.

Background & Story

King was an ordinary shut-in gamer who kept being found at the scenes of monster kills, monsters Saitama had actually destroyed, and, too frightened and bewildered to correct anyone, was credited with the victories. The Hero Association fast-tracked the 'strongest man on Earth' to S-Class rank 7, and the lie snowballed beyond any safe confession. King survives on reputation alone: monsters surrender, heroes defer, and his paralysed silence reads as menace. His one honest relationship is with Saitama, the man who knows the truth, does not care, and comes over to beat him at fighting games, the only arena where King is genuinely, terrifyingly skilled.

Powers & Abilities

  • The King Engine: The booming sound of King's heartbeat, which enemies mistake for the battle aura of the world's strongest man, it has ended confrontations before they begin.
  • Reputation and Bluff: King's legend does his fighting for him: monsters flee, villains surrender and heroes obey, making his complete lack of power one of the series' most effective weapons.
  • Elite Gaming Skill: In fighting games King's skill is real and overwhelming, he destroys Saitama effortlessly, the only battlefield where the strongest man on Earth actually is King.

Key Relationships

  • Saitama: The man whose victories built King's legend, and the only person who knows the truth, treats him as a friend, and loses to him at video games.
  • Genos: An S-Class colleague who reveres King as a genuine powerhouse and analyses his silences as wisdom.
  • Tatsumaki: The S-Class rank 2, who treats King as one of the few peers worth addressing directly, awe he has done nothing to earn and cannot decline.
  • Garou: The hero hunter, for whom beating King is the ultimate prize, a confrontation King's bluff has to survive on reputation alone.
